Olympia to Redmond Oregon easiest route suggestions

Recommended Posts

So i have an offer to buy my old  57 4door for full asking price but the dude wants it delivered to Redmond Oregon.. I am looking at Google maps and it says Hwy 26 is shortest.. I am sceptical and want to know if going south to Salem or even Eugene is easier and faster.. I will be pulling a dual axle trailer both ways and don`t want to expore the backroads of America,,, just get there and back somewhat stress free..

Short version,,,, From Portland what is the easiest way to Redmond Oregon pulling a loaded trailer.

Help me..

i used to live there and make that trip often. personally i prefer I5 to I205 to 84 west until u hit either the dalles or biggs. at the dalles you can take hwy 197 but its a short steep climb up the deschutes river canyon and then u hit hwy 97 to redmond. scenery is amazing and law enforcement is non existent. no traffic. thats where i grew up.  if u go till biggs u can hit hwy 97 and ride it all the way to redmond. thats a busier route and it goes through shaniko (ghost town). hwy 26 is an ok option, just watch the speed and watch for idiots. personally i dont like driving through gresham and sandy. big city traffic sucks any way you slice it. then up and down the mountain pass and through the indian reservation.   theres a few casinos and a pretty good resort just off the side of the road. but when u are in redmond, look up cibellis pizza. order a large. if it isnt the best pizza u ever had ill buy it.

Go as far down I-5 as possible.

I-5 is only screwy during rush hour.

And only in and out of Portland.

South in the AM; North in the PM.

Easy peasy.

Cross over at 1 of 2 places.

22 from Salem or 20 from Corvallis.

Don't listen to the 2 guys who aren't Oregonians.

26 through Mt. Hood is up and down, curvy, narrow, and slow.

Not to mention way out of the way.

Stay off 26.

Beautiful drive. Enjoy it.

Portland to Bend, highway 26, or 22 is a toss up.  This is my deciding factor, going to Bend.  Go over 26 going to Bend, you get up over the Cascades quickly, and it is down hill the rest of the way.   Coming home from Bend, go highway 22, over Sisters, and you again climb quickly, and down hill the rest of the way.  You are not going to Bend.

Redmond is north of Bend.  Highway 26 both directions.   Do not go I-5 to Corvallis.  Why drive too far south to drive north again?

Highway 26 from Portland to Mt Hood is a popular highway for skiers in the winter.  A lot of it is four lanes, until you get east of Blue Box pass.

Yeah i aint worrying about rush hour traffic on a Saturday/Sunday ,, and like i said i don`t want to see the country,, it`s all about the money and ease of getting there and back .. If driving for pleasure,,  curvy is awesome,, but pulling a big ole car on a big ole trailer for more than 8 hours round trip,, i probably won`t even look out the side window if i was 10 feet from Mt. Hood... I live close enough to the woods to know what they look like, i just wanna roll in scoop my cash and roll out..

Just couldn`t tell if 26 was hiway or expressway or how curvy it was.

Which is curvy-er 20  or 22 ?? I don`t mind driving a little but farther if it`s easier.

Thanks for the input

hopefully i will have enough time to meet up with Jon for lunch and

Ok that throws a monkey wrench in it,, becauseit looks like there is some really straight parts when you get into the desert looking landscape, ( on the satellite view ) , but was worried about the wooded parts as i assumed they were very curvy,, and that would be hard on brakes and nerves.

Cdubs directions remind me of that Charlie Daniels song ,,, un-easy rider

you're right about 26 being curvy. but i5 has rush hour traffic south in the morning, north and south in the afternoon, and generally sunday afternoon north i5 is fucked up too. i'm mainly going between Wilsonville and Vancouver tho. I know south of Wilsonville to salem usually doesn't have many hiccups.  I don't live in Portland cause the couve is cheaper for housing, but I work there and have spent a good majority of my time driving around the Portland/Tualatin/Wilsonville area. i5 has so much random traffic that random fuck ups happen all the time, even more so now than a few years ago.

I 5 is the bizness.

Straight shot till turn. Then east for, what, 40 miles?

Take 26 when you have the 510.

Take the straightest shot you can when gas is at a premium.

Driven every way around there so many times.

Business run? 70mph down the freeway.

Thank you. Please call again.

Dude! I drove truck for a few years and trust me I5 south to 205 south to US26 east will be your best bet for Redmond, It may have its slow spots but it will be the easiest drive and 26 has way more 2 lane sections for slower rigs. As much as we all hate getting stuck behind a slow moving truck the guy working behind the wheel isn't too happy about holding up traffic.

Redmond, Oregon is east of the Cascade mountains.  I-5 goes down the Willamette valley, west of the mountains.   You have to cross the mountains somewhere.   I 84 to highway 97 is way out of the way.

Take 26.  I have done it with full sized pickups, Datsun pickups, towing horse, and boat trailers.  Even done it with a 521 towing a two horse trailer.

You could come across at Morton, over Baby Shoe Pass and into Troutlake,WA. Drop down into White Salmon and then down I 84 to 97.  There is a bit of gravel on Baby Shoe but it isn't bad.  Scenic as it gets along the west side of Mt. Adams.

You can drop through salem and over the jeff pass. Through Detroit. Over Hood isnt bad either, def not a bad drive but it will be a long one my brother inlaw tows atv trailers all day ere day over those 2 passes.

fuck it. turn it in to a datsun fun run. show up at the doods house with 6 0r 7 datsuns

Yeah a run through Mt. Hood would be alot more pleasant in a zippy littlecar,, instead of a 12 mile to the gallon road hog...

After crunching the numbers i am not sure i am willing to haul it that far for the little extra i would make..  Because feeding all my sons on road food would literally eat up quite a bit of any profit..
