]2eDeYe
You will need the 8 lug hubs for the 44 to match the 14b, just an FYI :) Quote Link to comment
Boxcar
This is wag width.58" picture 65" axles. Have fun with that. Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
This one has full width, not too bad...probably really stable. 1 Quote Link to comment
ratsun73
i talked to a buddy of mine and he has a dana 44 full width with 8 lug hubs to match the 14 bolt...he wants to trade for my wagoneer 44...should i do it or not...keep in mind that i still need to switch the rear axle. 1 Quote Link to comment
Boxcar
What gears are in these axles? Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Gears is a good question. The 14b probably has 4:10's but you will want to verify. The full width 44 could have any gear set depending on the rig it was removed from. Also keep in mind the 14 bolt is a big pig and you will want to run at least a 38" tire to keep the ground clearance at the differential that you would have with 35" tires and the 44. If the gears match the 14b and you trade straight across that is probably a ok deal if all the parts are in decent condition as the 14b shouldn't be very expensive. Quote Link to comment
ratsun73
yea i think i will reinforce the frame, add some supports, and run some 38.5 boggers. the front axle is out of a suburban and is 65 hub to hub so it should be perfect. Quote Link to comment
ratsun73
what other rear axle would be a good option because the 14 bolt is really big. Quote Link to comment
q-tip
There is the trusty ol 9" ,the Dana 44, Dana 60 that are all centered diff Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
9" and dana 44 are good for 25" tires. Dana 60 is pretty big as well. Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Depends on you style of wheeling, I wheeled my scout on 35" tires and only a Dana 27 front and never broke anything. And I'm sure redeye means 35" tired not 25" 1 Quote Link to comment
ratsun73
Well im 16, it has a v6, we have mostly mud and hills around here....i think the stronger the better lol. Quote Link to comment
q-tip
I doubt you will break a 44 or a 9" with anything smaller than a 37" tire. 1 Quote Link to comment
ratsun73
is a 9 inch the some wms as my dana 44? the 44 is 58. i got the truck up to the neighbors house yesterday.....picts when i have some more progress. Quote Link to comment
Boxcar
A 44 from a late mod Bronco or 1/2 tone Ford will be 65" As will be a 9". 10 bolt from a 1/2 ton Chevy = 65" 12 bolt and Dana 60 have about the same mass and droop. 38" Boggers ? ................ Hey, can you say tire greed ?...... Build big or go home. I have given up on the: lets help build something the kid can afford to drive and maintain theory and will now switch to : lets help build something huge that will hold up and be safe from a Datsun. If you are going to run 38" tires, go for the 60 or 12 bolt. You will brake the 44 or the 9". Boggers bight well. Get ready to cut the living shit out of the body and add lift for tire clearance. Strengthen the frame in a big way. Armor, lots of armor. 4:56 or taller gears. Big drive lines / High steer / panhards / track bars etc. EPIC build and rig. Will you, ( at 16 years old ) be able to afford to drive and maintain it? I suppose you could . Better get a good job. Will you have the time left in the day ( after work and school ) to enjoy it ? I'd guess, NO. BUT you will gain the experience and the know how to build a rig . Right ( for you ) or wrong, the knowledge is priceless. So go for it. 1 Quote Link to comment
q-tip
I must have missed the 38" tire part if the conversation, I'm with box car, this is a huge undertaking to build a rig to stand up the that sort of punishment. Not once in all my years of wheeling have I needed a tire bigger than 35" done a whole lot with just 33" tires. Quote Link to comment
ratsun73
yea the 38's idea went out the window with the full width axle idea...im not sure what rear axle to run with my dana 44...i wont be able to use the current one Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Well 58" sounds like it might be a waggy axle to me so check for some wagoneers around you. Maybe even an international pickup might have something close. Quote Link to comment
ratsun73
ok...if nothing else maybe a toyota rear i guess... Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Waggy front should be 62" WMS to WMS. Quote Link to comment
ratsun73
oh...i measured wrong...so with a 12 or 14 bolt rear the front will be close to the same width...right? Quote Link to comment

q-tip
So measure the axle backing plate to backing plate (its a bit easier) Quote Link to comment
Boxcar
Yes, a wag ( late model ) with disk brakes is 62" mounting surface to mounting surface. Pull a wag rear from a non quadratrack wag. Centered... 58" then add a disk brake set up. 62 surface to surface. The same can be done with a Scout 2 axle. Most of us measure Backing plate to backing plate. 1 Quote Link to comment
