And...... after finally finding someone who knows what to do with the flares, i have made a slight mistake... well not a mistake yet per se... i need to see if I cut too much material.

I'm doing a write-up on bubble flares when i finish this so someone else doesn't run into the same mistake. It appears the correct way to do the flares is to pie cut the fenders in a radius out from the wheel. Then take each section and bend it outwards to meet the flare. This adds strength and retains the metal in that area to help keep it rigid.

Soo... i have not cut much material at all. I don't think it will be a big deal (thank god my cutting wheel was toast last night). I'll take a whole lot of pictures to help make it more clear what needs to be done.

everyone will tell u a different way to do it ....but the pie cutting and stretching sounds best to me ... but i owned a bubble flair car that i tore them off only to find a disaster of a pair of quarters and have never had the pleasure of installing them ....good work so far...

i think it will be fine. I'll make all the mistakes on one side so i can do a really clean one on the other... that way there is a good write up and people will know what to do. Worse comes to worse, i can always get some sheet metal and start over. (although i really don't want to do that)

Just take what is left of the inner fender and pie cut then bend that shit out and weld a bead to each one to join the outer skin where they meet for extra strength too...

Tried searching dime quarterly... nothing. I've looked all over and haven't found a decent write up anywhere. No good info whatsoever except the recent project by a teenager who tubbed his rear end... but thats further than i want to go with this.

I got a lot done, but i got stuck. The wire i have is too thick to weld the body panels and fender wells together, it will just burn the metal up so I have to wait to get the wire until tomorrow. I tried a couple places but they only had .030.

Here's my progress today (yay!)

Bending up the panelling to see if I can get a clean arc

And then I tried to see if I could find a sweet spot for welding the panels together... Nope...

Theres a lot of clearance once you open it up.

Well... i'm happy with how it's turning out. Some of the edges aren't perfect and stuff, but shit... i'm going to really take my time making it nice and try to do a really good job. After using the angle grinder with the sanding disc i think i may end up taking off a lot of paint and maybe even trying my hand at painting the car down the road some day.

God you have no room in your garage at all..

loving the thread you are always working on the car.. go get some bushings tho.. they should be next on your list!

Link to comment

Yeah, it's a tiny garage in a townhome, and i'm not supposed to work on my car :D

My neighbors are cool about it though and i fix stuff for them sometimes so they never rat me out. Yeah, bushings are on the list too... I almost bought a full set at one point but then i realized a lot i don't need because i've switched suspension components, etc. Once i am done with all the major stuff i'll get bushings. I'm super strapped financially ATM because of some family stuff and it looks like it will be that way for quite a while. I will still be working on the car, fortunately most of the stuff i need to buy has already been done... it's mostly time now.

And now I have gas

It's time to weld up some fender wells! Hopefully I can get the fender wells welded up tonight or at least this week. I want to dump it and take some pictures!!!!!!

Are you renting or did you buy the cylinder? Either way, how much was it full?

Link to comment

It was $150 for the cylinder and $30 for the gas. With tax it was $198. I have a few more projects and stuff on my GFs car so I figured it was worth it to get the medium bottle. It means less trips to get gas. I finished welding one side and part of the other side. The passenger side front section of the rear wheel well is all smashed in though. I didn't realize it until i started tapping the pie sections out to make them flat/flush with each other... when i got to the front i was like WTF?! That's why all the bondo was there. I guess it was hit on both sides behind the doors. Weird place to get hit on both sides right? I've been super sick because my girlfriend got me sick again, so i didn't get it finished yet. I'm staying home one more day, so I may be able to do a little in between resting. If I can just finish the rest of the welding, grind them down and epoxy on the fenders, i'll be golden. The bondo is easier and i have time after work to do that for sure. I did accidentally leave a few little holes where i burned through the sheet metal. It's really easy if you point the arc wrong to make a hole. I'm just doing my best with the knowledge i may need to come back at it with more experience later and make it nicer.

My girlfriend woke up at 5 to go hiking with a couple of her friends, but then decided against it and my mom is sleeping on the couch at our house. My girlfriend didn't want to go back to sleep so she got up and was doing a bunch of stuff in our room, so I was basically up at the same time. I was disappointed because I was really looking forward to sleeping in, but I'm seeing it as a positive thing now. I made some coffee and stepped out into the garage... yay! Going to make some more progress on the fenders right now. I'll upload some pictures as the day progresses. I'm hoping to get them epoxied and bondo'd by lunch time.

I am also likely going to pull the thermostat housing or some other piece of metal and drill/tap it to accept my water temperature sensor. That way I feel comfortable driving the old girl, knowing nothing sinister is going on with the under hood temps.

w00t.

Looks like my car once I started digging into it  :crying:

Atleast your just accepting it and moving on. I can't sleep at night with that much bondo. But then again your driving yours and I'm.......

Are those 15x8's? Tire size?
