1977 Datsun 620 series selling for $800.00-SOLD

Recommended Posts

This is an automatic 1977 620 series Datsun Pickup for sale $1000.00. The body paint, brakes, tires, and shocks were replaced in 2005. A new Weber carburetor was installed in 2006. The wiring under the hood, the coil, and spark plug cables are were replaced in the summer of 2007. Odometer is at 800 (hundred, not thousand). It just recently rolled over and has probably rolled over once before. So at least 100k miles, maybe 200k. An engine flush was performed at the 88,000 mile mark, in 2006. It gets 18-20 miles to the gallon. The truck is registered and insured. Above all else, I am not a mechanic, and this truck is being sold as is. Any sale will be final and performed with written and signed agreement by both party’s. Links to pictures are provided at the bottom of this post. The next post will host the pictures themselves. Located in Creswell, OR, 20 minutes outside of Eugene/Springfield.

Things of note-

There is start button under the dash that goes directly to the starter. The key ignition will sometimes not start the truck, so I had the button installed to bypass this problem. The button has never failed to start the truck. The start button does not work without a key, so, theft from this source is not an issue.

There are three keys to this truck; one for the driver door, one for the passenger door, and one for the ignition.

The rearview mirror is not the original and I do not have the original.

The speedometer is fast by approximately ten MPH. If it says 65, you’re going 55.

There is no tachometer.

The seat has a large gash on the driver’s side.

Opportunities that can be worked on-

The gas tank can not currently be filled to it‘s max. The over-pressure caused by a gas pump's automatic shutoff causes one of two things; more commonly, a small spurt of fuel sprays out of the line (less than a capful). Less common, a larger amount (my guess is 1-2 gallons) spills out. This problem is avoided by never filling the gas tank past 3/4 full, or 8 gallons if empty/near empty.

The engine will “chug” and, sometimes, die while the car is stopped and in gear. It does not do this while in neutral or park, nor does it happen while in motion.

The running/tail lights are currently hotwired to the battery. There are two pull switches in the cab, one for each set of lights. The second pull switch is in place of the cigarette lighter, as that never worked and I never needed it. I still own the cigarette lighter mechanism.

The ignition is loose, which sometimes causes the grinding noise associated with turning the key with the engine already on.

The cab light and washer fluid does not work.

The engine-temp gauge does not work.

Seems like a harsh response to a for sale ad.

At least he's being upfront about the condition of the truck.

Not at all, these are easy to fix, I'm wondering why they aren't on such a nice looking truck. Push button start and switches for running lights now that's harsh.

Very TRUE!!!!! NICE TRUCK for the money,EASY fixes for a RATSUNER,SOMEONE BUY THIS!!!!!!! GLWS

The "leaking gas tank" is usually an easy fix, one of the return hoses (generally the ones to the vapor tank) has rotted out. Every '76 I've owned had that problem. Replace the hose, and the problem goes away.

The temp gauge is usually just a corroded connector.

The washer and dome light, well, I think I've had one 620 where those worked. I have yet to have a working underhood light.

The taillights, that's scary. Only reason they get bypassed is they keep blowing fuses, so now they're hard-wired in, probably straight to the battery with no fuse, since the short is intermittent. Pretty soon it'll become non-intermittent and catch fire. Most of the time it's the front marker lights, where the wire runs through the body. The rubber grommet has rotted out, the wires rubbed the bare rusty metal, causing a short. Replacing the grommet and fixing the wire usually fixes the short.

Not sure why the carb is installed backwards, unless that's one of those oddball Weber DFT carbs.

NADA lists this vehicle as having a value of $1425 in a drivable condition. This truck is drivable, though it requires "a special touch" due to the engine chugging mentioned below. I'm tired of keeping this truck around. I only drive it once, maybe twice a month. If it does not sell this summer, for the $1000, I will be scrapping it.

Opportunities that can be worked on-

Once in awhile, the over-pressure caused by a gas pump's automatic shutoff causes a small spurt of fuel to spray out of the line (less than a capful). Once, in the entire lifetime I owned the truck (six years), 1-2 gallons spilled out. As this only happened once, I do not know if it is related to the same problem. Either way, I usually only put in 8 gallons to avoid the problem.

The engine will “chug” and, sometimes, die while the car is stopped and in gear. It does not do this while in neutral or park, nor does it happen while in motion.

Numerous gas-pedal pumps (literally around 50) are needed to get the truck started, and a solid warm-up time (I like to give it 5 minutes) is needed so it runs, though it wasn't aleways like that and this is probably due to the once or twice a month driving.

The running/tail lights are currently hotwired to the battery. There are two pull switches in the cab, one for each set of lights. The second pull switch is in place of the cigarette lighter, as that never worked and I never needed it. I still own the cigarette lighter mechanism.
