Arguably, I'd say in the long term, if only measured by gas savings, and assuming the battery packs are recycled, then yes, the Prius is more ecologically friendly. However, if everyone had restored or rebuilt their 1970s vehicles (mainly Datsuns) with modern equipment, that would be MUCH MUCH MORE environmentally friendly as the carbon footprint to build the new vehicle would not enter into the equation. The Datsun has already been made. Once a vehicle has already been made, it is more efficient to maintain that vehicle, and greener in the long run, ASSUMING mileage and emissions can match the current technology.

Similar to reusing a coffee cup, or buying lots and lots of styrofoam cups. Do it in a Datsun every time! :D

Why not have both?

"This Datsun Pickup Truck looks unusual. The truck normally has a rigid axle rear end and thus rear wheels can’t get camber like this…The trick is this truck got a motor and power train from a Toyota Prius and custom independent rear suspension. This old truck goes green."
