A14 will rev, but wont drive.

Today when I went to drive my 79 datsun 210 with the A14, it was hard to start, I had to hold the gas pedal down for it to start.

When I went to drive It, it would only go like 1 mph. In Neutral car will rev, but when I put it in drive or 1st (automatic) It will only go 1 mph or die on me.

It is getting spark and fuel, any ideas? Car wont even start now.

Did it drive before? Have you done any timing chain mods?

Tranny dead or no fluid more likely. Possibly bad torque converter, vacuum leak, but a vacuum leak shouldn't allow it to rev in neutral.

No mods to the engine, Just yanked the Ac out, and cleaned the bay up alittle, but it drove fine during the week.

sounds just like what my l20b in my 620 does idels and revs up but wont move just dies. Im convinced that it is timeing or igntition but i havent had time to mess with it.

Many things can cause this, usually fuel or spark related.

Update: Cleaned the carb up, messed with the distributor, and she starts and drives, but dies when you come to a stop, and also after I rev it theres pop that comes from the engine, Any ideas before I buy a new carb.

You probably added some advance right? Running lean is my guess. Pull the plugs and they will be very white.

How do the plugs look? Got an ohmmeter? Check plug wires and coil?

Well I rebuilt the carb, and now Im missing a piece and I was wondering If you guys know where I can buy one, or what its called. The motor is idling high probably because Im missing the piece that goes on top of this. I remember it has a tube sticking out of it.

That's just the heat shield, it will run without it.

The piece that goes on top of the heat shield is the insulator. Without that the carb may possibly overheat. There is a gasket under the Shield, and two more gaskets on each side of the insulator.

 

A gasket leak will cause a high idle ...

My long gone b210gx had the same problem. Jet had rolled out into the carb. Fluuuuuuuudddinnnnn.

Does your car running with the smog canister. My old A14 did the same symptoms, it had vaccun leak in the canister line. It was a dried hose, you could try changing them (new hoses), quiet and cheap way to find out.

Alright, so we got the rebuilt carb on with the insulator, even sealed it with some liquid gasket, It will start and idle for a few seconds and die, but if we hold the choke open it will idle like normal.

ok, so some progress

 

now you can adust the choke. When you get it fully warmed, set the idle speed and mixture.

Alright, so im driving the car now but its running rich, Its puffing out black smoke out the exhaust and when I come to a stop it dosent like to idle.

Take the air cleaner lid off. Shine a flashlight down the carb. I'm sure you will see that the choke is partly closed. That causes it to run rich and run fast.

Your choke heater may not be plugged in. This is the heating element under the black round thing. The wire to it is usually red and will only have power when the motor is running and alternator charging. In a pinch you can connect to the idle cut solenoid to make it work.

 

 

The choke will come partly off from engine heat but not all the way so it needs fixing.
