L20B with Crank trigger ignition

DailyDato

Is there anybody out there who has devised a working plan to adapt a crank trigger ignition to an L20B so that one could run a DIS Coil pack setup found standard on most GM car's and totally do away with a distributor? I have found info for swapping COP setups on Toyotas to a DIS GM coil, but has any one tried it on a Datsun?

Wouldn't you need something like mega squirt to program the advance?

Doug you could run a Z24i Crank Angle Sensor, it's just like the KA24E. Wouldn't need the toothed wheel on the crank at all.

Or get a programmable ignition box with an adjustable timing curve, advance, ETC. Kinda expensive though, but very fun to play with on your laptop cool.gif

Well i was looking at an MSD box, but don't want the added expense of a crank trigger kit, didn't know if anybody had any ideas, I was thinking like a off a protege, its real thin and could easily space the other pulleys out easily enough, or like a Ford 1.9, its a thick aluminum wheel, could possible bore it out and bolt it to my balancer.

How do you control the coil to cylinder firing order without the timing of an ecm, what type of ignition setup do you have? Got a few pics of your setup?

Yes....my thoughts also.

CAS without a ECM/U...?

I'm missing something... .... :D

Im working on it. But taking my time.

I made this.

I put the tooth ring on the pulley that would line up for the belt. So this one is no good :( . It was pretty cheap to make besides the pulley. My 74 620 pickup has a pulley thats perfect for this  . I just changed jobs so don't have access to machine tools anymore. I may have to sneak back into my old place to make some chips.

Or I may just endup buying this one from racetep.

Here is a diagram of the GM tooth wheel.

GM-DIS-wheel.gif

Megasquirt can run the dis setup pretty easy. But a GM ECU is like $40 at the junk yard and a prom chip to tune it with is around $5. The 7727 or 7730 ECU's work well find one of those in a V6 lumina or grand prix anything with that 3.1L v6 should have one. Then find a car with a quad4 engine and grab the memcal out of that ECU. Its the blue thing behind the door on the ECU.

You can program them with an old PC and an old 3com network card.

This link is for burning DSM prom chips but all the chips are pretty much the same.

I would run the code59 firmware on it you can download it from http://www.code59.org

If your going to run this with a carb I would try to add the MAP sensor and TPS so ECU gets a little more info and can really get you on the right advance curve.

TunerPro + code59 are pretty awesome. Build or buy a GM Diag cable for use with the TunerPro any your good to go.

Watch out at the junkyard the cars after about 96 have a different module that sits under the coils. You want per 96 ignition modules they are smart ones that default to 10degree of advance when the ECU does not work. The ones after 96 require the ECU to function.

There is a guy Ted Brown on http://corvaircenter.com/ That did a good right up on doing a whole GM ECM and DIS setup on his corvair.

More info on ford stuff.

There is good info on the megasquirt site. Do a google search for megasquirt GM DIS.

Megajolt JR. or megasquirt can run the ford EDIS setup. This thread on hybridz.org is pretty good for the ford stuff.

Here is a write up on an install on a corvair. I know its not the L series but its a conversion non the less.

Here is a guy that has it running It on an L6 Zcar.

Read the whole thread. I think he goes a little too GM with the GM Throttle body, but it works. He puts the DIS stuff on near the end of the thread.

I've done it on 3 L series engines (Chris's still in the works) using Megasquirt. Here are some pics. We used it for spark and fuel though. It's only $247 if you build it yourself. I just finished assembling one for my S13 (I want to do a plug and play unit) Here are some pics, I have the DXF file for the sensor block if you want me to email it to you.

i wonder if a guy could use a setup like whats in a 97 ford ranger? my buddy just wrecked his and is gonna scrap it out. i'm gonna have to check it out a i bit. it's that pickup in my project thread that is wrecked. that pickup is an 84 with all the running gear and wiring from a 97. never even thought about it until i read this thread.

As long as its not the crazy 8 plug 4 cylinder it should work. The EDIS is very common. Most people pull it off of escorts for 4 cylinder stuff. The tooth ring off the escort is really easy to use on the L6 pulley, as seen in hybrid Z thread above. but the sensor, module, and coil pack from the escort are a sure thing for L4's. Escort sensor and ring + v6 module and coil (explorer, mini van, or taurus) work for the L6.

Check that each coil pack goes to its own ignition module. If both coil packs goto one ignition module or straight to the ECU it probably will not work.

Looking it up on rockauto there is no listing for an ignition module(ICM) for the 98' 4 cylinder, But there is 1 for the 97 but it does not say how many are needed. The coil pack looks like the normal EDIS coil on both years. The ignition module (ICM) on the 97 ranger does not cross to the escort which is known to work. It also looks very different in the pictures.

The coils and sensor will probably work but may require some cable/connector splicing.

Please read this mega-squirt or mega-jolt page for full info on the EDIS setup. The megasquirt page has part numbers and diagrams.

Megasquirt ---> http://www.megamanual.com/ms2/EDIS.htm

Mega Jolt ---> http://www.autosportlabs.net/Ford_EDIS_technical_information

The megasquirt page does not mention the ranger 8 plug setup. It may be useful for the Z series 8 plug heads though.

Yes, get it running and troubleshoot everything you have 1st. It will be much simpler to get it running with the new ignition later. I replaced a points dizzy on a Zcar one night with the cas style dizzy from an 82+ 280ZX turbo and the ECU from a M30 and it look all night to find that I didn't ground one wire. I knew the engine was a runner though so I kept at it and had it going just before midnight.

I just thought i would grab that shit off my buddy's rig b4 he haul's it off. did you guys look at the pic of it in my project thread?

Icehouse,

Why not just post the DXF's in this thread?

I would like to take a look at them if you have a chance. The GM stuff is quite similar and could be adapted.

Dudes I looked everywhere on my computer for the DXF file and can't find it! I know Chriss has it on a disk, I will see about getting him to post it.
