Ok, so this warning about various municipalities putting modified cars into the crusher may be only tangentially relevant to owners of Japanese classics, seeing as how many of our cars are not even capable of breaking the speed limit (or even leaving the driveway, for that matter). Still, for those of you rolling old school with a 4AG or SR20 swap, we offer this public service announcement.

Last week, police from inland So-Cal counties crushed six modified cars used for allegedly containing stolen parts. In the LA Times example, Charles Hoang had the receipts to the transmission of his 350hp ‘94 Integra, but the fuzz deemed it stolen and examples had to be made, so Hoang’s car was scrapyarded. Ontario (that’s CA (which means California)) Police Cpl. Jeff Higgins and clever punner says, “We’re making a dent” in street racing activity. According to the article this amounts to a roundabout attempt to curb racing, because such cars are run hard, which means they need more frequent repairs, which will more likely result in the use of stolen parts. Rube Goldberg, eat your heart out.

Not to be outdone, Ontario (Canada, this time) Attorney General Michael Bryant has warned that just plain modifying a car with speed parts is cause for a crushing, says the Toronto Star. We’ve heard Canada was socialist, but come on! Says Bryant: “Just on the balance of probabilities if we can establish that a car is being used for the unlawful purpose of street racing, we will seize it and you will never see it again,” which means that if your car even looks like it could be used for illegal racing, it’s toast. He even likened speed shops to bomb factories. Yes folks, fear of death by bomb is the new Nazi comparison.

The gestapo wins again....

When will personal responsibility and the freedom to persue happiness be completely outlawed?

Oh wait, it already has been in California and Canada :fu:

So you can buy and sell speed parts, but don't put them on your car....wtf??

How do they prove a transmission is stolen? Not possible as far as I know...

well, engine serial numbers are one way. Those cars in particular were not only found to be involved in street racing but they confirmed without a doubt that they were using stolen engines, wheels, or other major components. I don't think a tranny only would be stolen. Likely in those chases the engine vin number would come up stolen. In that case it doesn't matter if the rest of the car is legit.

Cars caught for street racing but do not have stolen parts were not crushed.

Crushed cars are recycled. You won't find those in a wrecking yard. :D

I think car theives should be crushed. ;)

Yeah, it's the 'alleged' and the 'fuzz deemed it stolen' even though receipts were in hand....

I'm all for killing theives, but not at the expense of enthusiasts who have spent hard earned money, only to have the 'authorities' deem their pride and joy 'illegal' and destroy it.

If they had proof the tranny was stolen then they should have pressed charges against the guy for receiving stolen goods and returned the stolen property to the rightful owner. That's the way it should work.

Instead they crush the evidence? Seems a little fishy to me....all the more reason to stay the hell outta kkkali

You know if they werent such :fu: ups, they could sell the parts that arent stolen and make money. But we all know the vast multitude of idiots that control these types of things dont have 2 brian cells to rub together. Thus we have to see exspensive items go to scrap. That just pisses me off. I guess we'll just have to run from the cops to save our cars, or at least try!

I guess it's another reason to keep you nose clean on the street. stay out of trouble and don't screw with the fuzz (run)

I don't think that this will be too big of an issue (modified car crushing for no reason) and I think it's safe to say that none of us ratsuners really need to worry, we'd have to let our dattos get impounded, and I don't see that happening.

you can as long as the package is labeled "for off road use only. not legal for use on the highway"

you can have your vehicle impounded for 30 days, while they determine its fate, for being a spectator at a street race here.

if its a F&F type, consider it scrap when the cops illegally gets you to open the hood.

and dont be surprised if all the 'speed' parts get stolen while in the impound and are found later on another crushed ricer

until they allow racing in a sanctioned location this BS is going to continue to happen :cursing:

i agree with crushing street racers cars. Their are enough local autcross, drag, hillclimbs held by local car clubs that people who what to do some real racing they can. IN a safe controled enviroment. We have had 3 deaths from street racing this year. So if you really want to race check with your local car club and have fun and be safe.:D

When I first read this article I was still living in Cali and it kinda freaked me out. Then I started thinking about it and wondered why they didn't sell parts off the cars. Rather than crushing them they could essentially part them out and make a lot of money from those cars. The fog lights in that civic could fetch a pretty penny. The wing on the teg is still good too even after the crushing. Plus the money they could have made off of the rims is wayyy more than what the gov't would get from the scrapyard for the metal.

What I think should happen: They should part the cars out. Have some state mandated shops tear them down and sell off the parts. It'd be nice if it were like the insurance companies where the owner would be able to buy it back at a premium, but all signs point to highly unlikely.

The problem with that is alot of people don't wanna be in a 'club' and streetracing is free.

I think a streetracer with some brains could get permit's to hold 'events' in the industrial area of any big city...set up races with cones and whatnot....maybe even invite the police for crowd control...:fu:

That guy will be famous :D

I myself plan to head to pir in Kent to get some kicks and maybe find an empty parking lot to set up some cones this summer

I never believe what they print or say. For all I know these cars were in accidents and 'totaled'. Maybe they are already stripped and just the shell is left. Then they 'crush' them as a media event to make themselves look tough on street racing. And as a visual warning and scare tactic to others out there.

No way they can destroy known stolen property. If a car is stolen and used in a robbery, surely when the dust settles it has to be returned to the owner. Not saying it's total bullshit, there are probably some elements of truth in this story, just mostly bullshit. Stories like this hurt more than help. Street racers will just harden their mind set and become more militant.

As to street racers... they don't get nearly what they deserve.

i have heard of the toronto crushings, they even crushed a cavalier that had just rims. they said it looked sporty, and could race. its a freaking 110 hp cavalier that some chick had to get her to work!!! she sued tho, and guess what, she won, needless to say they cant crush cars there anymore unless they are actually caught racing. that to me is legit, you gotta be caught in the act, cant just look sporty, or every bmw and mercedes would get crushed in stock form.

Cars built since the late 80s-early 90s are required to have the VIN on every high-value part. This includes the body panels, engine, transmission, rear axle in RWD cars, etc.

How do you think they traced Tim McVeigh to the OKC bombing? The VIN on the rear axle of the truck. Sure, our Datsuns don't have that sort of marking, so it's impossible to tell.

The article quoted is quite biased. But I have no pity for those guys. Street and freeway racing is stupid. I know a couple guys who have done it when I was nearby- I will never, ever run convoy with them again. Scared the hell out of me, I was surprised I kept my cool. And this comes from someone who has driven a 47-year olf wooden boat over 100 MPH in a open cockpit with no seatbelts. I felt safer doing that than when I get passed by 2 idiots doing 90 racing each other on the freeway.
