how did you straighten the bumper?

Well straightening is term I use loosely, its more like undoing, it took a body hammer and a small sledge, for yours you may also need a piece of 2x4 to help (without damaging it more with your hammer) to 'untwist' it, a lot of patienence is also a BIG requirement. What you are trying to do is not smash it back to shape but rather reverse the damage done... does that make sense?

mhm that's all proper metal working on body work. The right hammer and a lot of patience.

I used to love to watch old timers straighten out the trip pieces, like around the windshield and what not. Just sit there with a little form hammer and tiny tap tap taps lol.

More weekend progress.

The battery tray was done... just done. SO I boxed it in and it worked out great, this will also keep debris, water, battery acid from accumulating in a corner under a tray where it can't be seen or easily cleaned.

With the floor, I made multuple sections because it was easier to make the bends that it needed, and in the end it is stronger.

Not bad...

I've been playing with the turn/brake wiring... and like with most 240z owners, its been a trying experience. I narrowed the problem down to the turn signal switch. Apparently nissan saw fit to run the brake lights through it... Well it creates a bit of a dilemma, if the switch goes bad (as mine has), you lose everything, well in my case it was intermittent, and I was tired of Fing with it. SO heres my solution.

I wired the brakes up as a single circuit, with a NEW fuse all its own. I ran a new wire all the way from the brake switch to the taillights... heres how. It may seem that I made things more complicated in the way that I did it but it was necessary, and in the end my car is now more visible to drivers behind me.

After pulling out the taillight harnesses, I notice that one of the bulbs is a dual filament, but the socket only had 2 wires on it (power and ground), so I opened it to see why. Inside only one side of the bulb receives power. WHY?! What a waste.

Well I went to the wrecking yard and grabbed a pair of 3 wire sockets off a 280z.

P5110017.jpg

Heres the OLD 3 wire socket.

P5110018.jpg

I wired them like this... The old 2 wire socket shown above had a green and black, the green is not needed any more cause thats the old brake/turn light wire. The old 3 wire socket has a green, green/white stripe, and black, and the new 3 wire socket has a green/white stripe, green/yellow stripe, and black. Take the green with white stripe wires and connect them together, they are your parking lights. Take the green wire from the old 3 wire socket and snip it, then connect it to the green with yellow stripe wire, and both of those connect to the NEW brake wire I mentioned earlier. The OTHER 2 wire socket is a single filament bulb and also has a green wire on it, leave it alone is now the turn signal light.

After all this I arranged them in the taillight housing like so.

you just did a project Ive been working on for three weeks in like a day..

 Actually, I spent yesterday (about 4hrs), tracing wiring schematics and figuring out why it wasn't working, and trying to get it all working. After failing to get it to work as well as I wanted, I spent about 3 hours today (not including the time in the wrecking yard), doing this.

YIPPEE! Just got done rebuilding and tuning up the carbs... I gotta say, the oil in the carbs is at LEAST 50% of the tuning! After reading several websites on tuning these things, I found one that seemed pretty legit, it said 20wt was good for WORN carbs, which I though mine were (they are not). After putting in the 20wt, the car ran worse than ever (although, I was finally able to adjust the mixture, I couldn't do that before the rebuild), so I went to the good ole FSM, and it said DO NOT USE 20wt or higher... so I tried so 10w30, and that seems to be the magic number for my setup. Runs great, throws back in the seat, no issues with the carbs now. Next I will have to take care of an oil leak at the front... I think its the front main seal, cause oil is being slung all around in a circle, any suggestions? Also, found that the output shaft seal is leak on the trans too.

  • 2 weeks later...

The shift knob Mklotz made for me came a couple days ago, I got around to putting it on, so here it is.

This first pic should be funny... but only to Mike, inside joke. Sorry guys.

The shifter feels real nice in your palm. Solid feel, and a great texture. Definately won't slip out of your hand. So far so good, I even decided to give her a test especially for Mike, I grab it torqued it sideways and pulled HARD... then un threaded it to see if I hurt it all, and my thoughts thus far is that this thing will out last the car! Good job Mike, THANKS A LOT!

I got my new wheels from Tdaaj today, they came with a pair of tires, which I installed myself! Yes, in my garage, and no I don't have a machine. Now I only have to pay for a $5 balance... now THATS ratsun! Oh, and sorry Skib... :D

5 bux a tire seems right lol. or at least only what it should cost, christ all they do is spin the tire then add weights. not rocket science anymore.

And, from the looks of that box, it looks like Mike forgot to put the shifter in the box before he sealed it up, or he got lonely

Did you use the redneck tire seating technique? :-)

and you have a place that balances for 5 bucks a tire? That's crazy cheap, like 1980's prices by me lol.

Nope, didn't use the old flammable aerosal way, just put the inflator with compressor on it, and bounced it a little to get it to seal enough to pop the bead on. I go to local used tire place, and they use the old school balancer, not a spin balancer. Nothing fancy for wheels/tires like these.

Nah, the box got smooshed a little by the Post Office. Mike packed it real good actually, he knew it might get the rough treatment, he used enough bubble wrap to go around my head! :D

Looking good man! Love the refurbished floor pans. :D Coming together nicely.

I ended up using 10 weight fork oil in my SU's.

Thanks Jes, I've worked my butt off on this thing, VERY little money as well. So far the carbs are working great, next test is the LONG drive to see how the 10w30 works out... just gotta get 2 more tires. Next weekend maybe... hopefully my friend will hook me up... free of course.

 To bad I don't have balloon tires! I think I will just paint them black... they will eventually be running studs for winter use, OR I'll pass them on to some other lucky fellow when I get my 16s... who knows when that will be so. :D
