  1. Brotip: put shell on truck chassis. ... Or hey put it on a VW or porsche tub !! Don't scrap it please... Just throw it in a shed for a while. The body can still be used...mostly.
  2. As I said, my setup with roadster clutch 510 disc, 510 slave, 510 master, 510 t/o from dogleg ... The same thing was happening to mine, disengage at the bottom of the pedal normal for new clutch, but should FULLY disengage. Adjust the plunger at the pedal to screw INTO the master cylinder... See if it helps. It fixed mine. There is a lock nut, then turn the rod with pliers or vice grip.
  3. FYI you can get a set for $380. http://www.amazon.com/Tokico-HPK255-Suspension-Nissan-280ZX/dp/B006MCIWGO I was going to get them for my ZX, but decided to replace bushings, new sway bars, and cut the springs until I can afford coilovers.
  4. Adjust the plunger at the pedal to go futher into the master cylinder. I had the same issue. Now its gone. Lift up your foot is disengaging ?? wtf ?? Pushing the pedal to the floor disengages the clutch, then releasing the pedal returns it to its clamped engaged state.
  5. I say acceleration in 5th for whenever I get my car prepped and safe enough for track use. I'll probably exceed 95mph that 4th gear will top out, in this case 5th will be nice to get 110-120mph with 4.375's. The 5th gear will still be more tall than what I have now, being 3mph faster at the same revvs. Also my motor does not make much power below 3000rpm, its only where it starts to wake up and it has a nice power balance at 3500rpm on the freeway right now, IMO its about the right speed for its current tune. There will be no issue of different driveshaft bolt pattern, ect? Okay, thank you. I will go try to find a diff from the junkyard. Will the later H190 D21 diff drop in the same? Or only the 521 and 620's ? edit, nevermind I see how it goes in now. Thanks for the help, datzenmike ! I needed a bit of a jolt to picture how it worked. I am only confuse about one thing, there are different size front case things that hold the pinion, is there any difference in pinion gear length ? does it not need to come over with the ring gear?
  6. Hello all, I've been doing some reading and have not found my answer. I have 510 wagon with stock H190 , 3.889 gearing, 195-55-15(22.5") and a early WR ZX gearbox (3.32, 2.077, 1.308, 1.0, 0.864) and going to be dropping in a late CR/tall OD ZX gearbox(3.062, 1.858, 1.308, 1.0, 0.745) Currenly with 3.889/0.864 5th its 72.7mph @ 3500rpm which is acceptable economy and keeping the motor in a comfortable rev range( at the bottom of the power band) With the new gearbox 3.889/0.745 5th it will be 72.2mph @ 3000rpm which will put it at what feels like the bottom of the torque band. This is good for cruising and economy, but acceleration and top speed will hurt for track and performance use. All though I love to cruise at 80mph, this is not a DD and the shorter gearing will be more to my liking. So I want to swap in a 4.375 ratio from a truck H190. This will make 1-2-3-4 super close ratio for acceleration, and put the tall 0.745 5th gear for 75mph at 3500rpm and 128mph top end at 6000rpm. Seems a good sacrifice between street usability and rally style gearing to wake up the low power motor. Even a 4.6 ratio would be nice being 71.4mph at 3500rpm !! Still streetable ... Shift points aren't even much different. My question is are the pinion/ring gear bolt on from the later 73-80 trucks with h190's ?? Where else can I source a 4.375 ?? Even a 4.11 would be okay if it was all I could swap. Really want to do this soon. I know there are different carriers, but I have not seen any info on gear interchangeability. I can get a speedo gear from nissan for the short gearing. Thanks.
  7. That 'oh shit' moment when you catch up to a cop on a backroad.

He was going over the speed limit... and I caught up to him 'quickly'.

  8. Man I love it, similar feeling to driving my car.. That engine just sounds amazing.
  9. Try to measure the ratios before you pick it up ... if its a comp NISMO C/R box even better. The stock ZX 81-83 is nearly identical gearing to the widest option NISMO CR box.... But the 5th gear has a larger drop (good for street) so maybe another option would be better if you want a usable 5th on the track.
  10. That is strange, the 81-83 ZX n/a box is the most close ratio optimal 5 speed for almost any situation! The ZX turbo T5 ratios are MUCH wider ! Still better than a 240z trans. Do you have the gearbox ? Get a marker, sharpie, white-out whatever, put trans in gear ... turn input shaft 1 full turn while counting how many times the output shaft goes around ... find the ratios.
  11. Is the gearbox you are getting an FS5W71B or NWC borg warner T5 ??? The output spline of the T5 is different than the nissan box. Either way its still a lot better than the 4 speed !! you can even make use of the 5th gear with better rear end ratio.. with 4.1, 4.3, or 4.6 you can choose your top speed .
  12. Use F20c/F22c 6spd RWD from S2000... I believe it still spins backwards like indy was saying. F20c has higher redline (8800rpm), more peak power(240hp/153ft-lb) F22c has more torque(237hp/163ft-lb) and lower redline(8000rpm) Some honda guys have adapted K24 engines to the S2000 ... those have better flowing heads for even more power (300+hp)
  13. Scion FR-S curb weight is 2,758 LBS according to the scion website. Its a 2+2 with a 4cyl RWD 6 spd, AC, air bags, ect... A similar chassis Honda S2000 is rated at 2,864 lb. Compare to the 240z at 2,355 lb, 260z at 2,450 lb, 280z at 2,875 lb and 280zx at 2,824 lb ... the FRS is lighter than the late model S30 and S130, with all the modern equipment and regulation stuff. IMO it should be easy for nissan to make a competitive chassis within similar weight limits.
  14. Its an extremely simple mechanical assembly, the ebrake in the ZX simply clamps the caliper by manual force vs hydrolic. You can actuate it with your hand, simply pull the lever that the ebrake cable connects to on the caliper, it should clamp the pads against the rotor. If that works, is the ebrake cable supplying pressure to that lever ? See if it has any play on it with the ebrake up. according to service manual, the ebrake lever should be between 4-6 clicks to the top... is it adjusted this way? The center part in front of the differential is where the ebrake adjust is, where the front cable meets the rear one. You adjusted it here, correct? I have a spare new rear ebrake cable for a 83 ZX I accidentally ordered two ... maybe you could use it.
  15. Those are NOT stock. Lowering shackles?? Stock ones are solid plates...
  16. Hopefully a retro 70's look with competition for the FR-86. I really think a modern inline-6 2.4 would be a great simple design to make a new great sports chassis. @JoeCool, it seems once nissan introduced the turbo Z in 81, and then higher powered Z31 and Z32, they where focusing more on super sports performance, rather than fun and affordability.
  17. @Rustina ... It would be cool to see someone do a sort of push-rod suspension setup on the rear, to keep clearance yet not cut into the cargo bay. I dunno if its practical with 510 IRS.
  18. Use 280zx N/A R200 ring gear, they are 3.90's. OR there are a few other options I'm sure.
  19. I think I like Akiba now. that was cool, it was nice meeting you all.
  20. My car is here in the city.... hanging out at work for a while I'll be over there at 10. B)
  21. No, I am wrong, I'm forgetting the 240z 4 speed is a longer gearbox. It is the same length as the late 5 speeds AFAIK!! Shifter is only 2" back from STOCK 510 4 spd. you will not need to worry about this, then. I'm unfamiliar with this, I started out with a ZX 79 5spd and already shortened driveshaft. *facepalm* I forgot the stock diff was a r160, the r180 is definitely a good upgrade for power. 280zx NA 80-83 come with 3.90 R200's, 79 came with 3.54 R180's in some situations according to the gear ratio sourced I'm seeing. 81+ turbo cars came with 3.54 R200's. According to some info, 3.90 and 4.11 R180's came in 720's, R180 4.11's came in NA 84-88 200sx. There are a lot of info around about what diff came in what car.
  22. You will need to take to a driveshaft shop to shorten it, also the shifter sits about 2" further back. There are lots of threads and info around on the ZX trans swap. Why don't you put back the stock 510 r180 ??? Or even better a 4.11 from a 84-88 N/A 200sx ?
  23. @Dirty Evo, Mark the output ( side flange... use either side) with a sharpie or white-out at 12:00 position, spin the input until the output has completed 1 full turn, count how many times you rotated the input...you now have the gear ratio. Other option: Do you have a GPS speedo? What rpm is 60mph in 4th ? What tire size? Also, your speedo is probably wrong because the speedo cog gear in the tranny is for a 3.9 ratio differential . if a Z car diff its probably a 3.54 .. which is horrible for a low torque l16.
