  1. Thanks haha cool to see you are still passionate for the datsuns my interest comes and goes too many other hobbies… been more into guns last like 10years nearly, got a couple projects I actually intend on keeping and I’m a little more mature now lol ( just a little) and don’t feel the need to sell or trade my cars every 10seconds… so hopefully here to stay now
  2. Any of you guys either into weightlifting or some other type of physical fitness? Or have you been into it at some point of your lives? (You vintage guys lol) I have done some novice strongman competitions and otherwise just moderate into powerlifting and bodybuilding but haven’t competed… had a strongman comp last month 5th in my class… it was an open novice class any body weight allowed, I’m l only 220lbs some of those guys a lot bigger than me… never plan on going pro or anything lol just a fun hobby to push myself to be the best version of myself I’m only 5 foot 8 so not really the best genetics for the sport… deadlifted a car with 8 extra 45 pound plates for 15 reps video if interested… only 2 guys beat me a lot of my class couldn’t even get it off the ground for a single rep… pic of me with worlds strongest man Robert oberst
  3. Yeah plan is rebuild the l20b ratsun style so if I have any more questions I’ll ask em here, slap that in the 521 with its original tranny for the time being… put the z20 as is in the 720 for now as a z20 and either bell housing swap the tranny or let it sit at an angle and bend a shifter for it (720 Is just going to be a old truck for hauling Craigslist finds etc don’t care much about how nice it is as long as it works) if I ever care about making the 720 nice I’ll probably convert the engine to an l series with head swap etc
  4. Ok yes I understand this, but in this orients the 240mm flywheel is still larger than a l20b flywheel at 225mm correct? … you have worries of the 240mm flywheel fitting the l16’s 4speed bellhousing … but it should fit in that 5 speed fine?
  5. If I did that (l20b from 720 into 521) I’d probably just have to wait and keep an eye out for an l20b head … I don’t mind running the 521 as a 4speed geared low for a while to get the truck on the road… didn’t you just say that the z20 could be made to sit at the correct angle with proper Lhead and mounts so it could work with the L series 5 speed?
  6. Yea already confirmed its a z20 … only extra head I have is the 210 l16 head, but I could take the w58 l20b head off the l20b onto the z20… ok so that settles it … I’ll put the l20b from 720 rebuild it the ratsun way stick it in 521…. Rebuild the z20 also ratsun way and put a lseries head on it and put it in the 720 and make the high comp engine … what’s stock compression for l20b with w58 head ?… what would happen if I put 210 head on either of the motors?
  7. Ok I read your responses and decided on a course change! friend hooked me up with a great deal on the 720 with l20b and 5 speed, and an extra z20 complete in the bed removed from a good running and driving truck… so either the l20b is going in the 521 or the z20 I’m leaning towards the z20 because it’s out of a 720 so it’ll bolt right in, it has a brand new clutch kit with it, I’ll just use the l16 tranny for now bend the shifter and make a diy transmission mount to deal with the lean seeing as it will mount at an angle to the z motor. or I rebuild l20b from 720 and put it in 521 instead and I put z20 in the 720 and 720 will now have the gangster lean on the transmission… will main and rod bearings for l16 work on l20b? Seems like just the rod bearings interchange right? Gasket set definitely works, clutch kit… are l20b and truck l16 both 240mm flywheel? All my rebuild parts should work to rebuild the l20b minus the rings and main bearings correct? if you have any better idea on what to do with all these parts let me know
  8. updates? still have the 720? All my favorite trucks i've had were the ones that were low and little beat up and your 720 brings me back to some of my old 620's I had.. I love it... Did you ever Cnotch it?
  9. ok hold on I spoke too soon there is a ridge at the top of every cylinder the front and rear cylinder you can catch a finger nail on it barely but only on passenger side of cylinder..middle two cylinders you can’t feel it really at all anywhere… the other two you can feel it around the whole top but only barely catch fingernail on left side… tried cleaning to see if it’s carbo buildup or something but definitely not
  10. o ok awesome seemed like a waste of time to screw them all the way out... Thanks for all the information.. I ordered a how to rebuild nissan datsun engines book, I now have everything i'm going to need for my L16... head is off started cleaning, head looks great, cam looks great... cant catch fingernail anywhere in cylinders, walls look fine, tops of pistons look fine.... Cleaning all of this will be a nightmare, that's by far going to be the hardest part of this job.. caked on sludge all over exterior... I don't know why I've always been so scared to conquer a job like this so far seems very strait forward except for the cleaning 😔 😅
  11. I too have thought about buying myself a maverick. My girlfriend ordered herself one (we are still waiting on it to be built and if it takes much longer might just forget it and keep her 2017 rav 4) I had a nice newer f150 with the 5.0 but gas mileage was killing me and I am soon to move and I will have a 40mile each way commute. I wanted to trade in and finance a maverick and get the best of both worlds... I did not want the hybrid like my gf ordered I wanted the awd 2.0 with a little bit of towing capacity.. but I realized I am lying to myself about what I need a truck for... I only tow something a couple times a year, same goes for using the bed. So I was better suited getting a comfortable commuter car with decent mpg I got a Newer used chrysler 300, and just use the 521 if I need a bed to haul. Major towing I can rent a truck for now.... A lot of guys I see get like a 30k-50k truck, then they justify getting a cheap commuter for a few grand to keep the truck nice. But they never use the truck as a truck but a few times a year. Makes sense to me to get a nice used commuter car or crossover for 10k-20k and get a old junky truck to do truck things with for 3-5k and keep it forever using it sparingly.. plus old used trucks from the 70's and 80's don't have all the extra crap to go wrong and be complicated to fix. I don't know your personal financial situation but a brand new maverick bang for the buck in this current economy isn't too bad of a deal. Its hard to get anything clean and newer under 50k miles on the used market for less than 16-18k, and you can get a brand new hybrid maverick for 20k and for the first time in history a new car seems like a reasonable idea. BUT picking up a car payment when you don't already have one and funds are a little tight really sucks and in my mind a maverick is right there at that financial limit for me personally. could I afford a $500 payment on something more expensive than a maverick? yeah I guess, but at that point am I buying more vehicle or more features? same goes for the maverick with the $350 a month payment, I can get just as much vehicle for $250 a month, less overall cost, and better in terms of its depreciation curve I'm just lacking a bed.. Ill use a beater truck for truck things... and in a few years maybe I can get a maverick used when they are more affordable used.
  12. I think its so crazy that the 240's are all so clapped out all the time... like you never ever see one with matching body panels and dent free lol.. So much so that this thing is a super clean car lol looks like a great start I always wanted one.
  13. Would you remove rocker pivots completely out of head for head cleaning? Or leave em?
  14. best bang for buck aftermarket mod you can do to the l18 is throw a weber on it and an electronic distributor from a 78-79 plus datsun with an L series, preferably 79+ because those have the desired "matchbox" distributor. They sell cheap electronic distributors on amazon now meant to be direct replacements for 79+ datsuns and these amazon distributors are lacking the "matchbox" on the side of them... This is probably because electronics have came a long way and now everything is internal.. I've been interested in seeing someone do an install and say whether these work or not. They are only $60-$90 last time I checked which in most occasions is cheaper than you can find a matchbox unit (and they are getting harder to find) ..... If you do these two mods and are not happy with the outcome there is nothing you can do to make the L18 gain much performance without major expensive reconstruction in the form of a full build (mill head, bore, bigger valves, etc)... So the next budget relatively easy option if you need just a little more oomph is to find an l20b and swap the whole thing in. GIve you a little more power and torque. We are still talking about low 100's on horsepower (to the crank!) but it should be at least a little fun to drive. If you need more horsepower than this mods on datsun engines probably aren't the best path for you currently. Look up LZ23, there are ways to build up Lseries engines with a little power but machining costs and sourcing old parts adds up, and you might as well just order a ca18 or some other JDM engine and make it fit at that point if power for dollar is all you are after. have you considered rebuilding your engine? chances are its old and tired and freshening it up could breath more life into it than any quick cam swap could, but if you find a cheap l20b cam you could always slap it in while you're already in there.
  15. sounds badass, its official you've released the kraken!
  16. here's some old pictures of my corona I had for a short time.. Little newer than yours I believe.. Yours should be an awesome project.. love that you have youtube videos will make this build a bit more fun to follow... thinking about doing park bench push in on my b210 atleast for the time being until I maybe get some 120y bumpers or something.
  17. The guy in my apartments with the ripped top Miata that just lets it rain, snow, and whatever else and still daily drives the thing 😂 😆
  18. I am now in the middle of this process, very excited to try my first ratsun rebuild! while engine is out of a datsun being rebuilt, is it a good idea to replace front cover gasket on the transmission? why is a flex hone preferred on ratsun? I've seen a lot of videos and read a lot on this topic and everyone elsewhere online is saying the 3 stone style hone is better because it helps to ensure the cylinder is straight with no areas that valley or peak etc, and although the flex hone gets the desired finish it may keep valleys etc intact ... I believe this is the argument they are making... I already purchased a flex hone but just wondering... Cleaning block and head: I live in an apartment though I do have a garage which is great.. Block and head are disgusting, if you lived in a garage no access to garden hose how would you degrease your engine? Take down to car wash? Tub of diesel fuel? Simple green in your bathtub?... Trying to keep odor down, when I spray brake cleaner in the garage my entire 3 story townhouse smells outrageous, can't imagine degreasing an entire engine...
  19. I agree with mike on youtube personalities using fear and peoples interests to gain them more views, and selling ideas people want to hear... but I am not 100% going to dismiss the idea of nuclear war or a ww3 situation being possible... If putin gets ukraine he might want to keep pushing into other countries and nato may feel the need to step in.. plus our dementia president might say the wrong thing to putin and cause some issues. The afghanistan thing made the USA look weak... Covid made the world economy weak and lowered morale in every nation and for putin this is the best time to try to build back the former soviet union and maybe even expand.. Someone gets in his way and I don't put it paste him to drop a nuke. Probably not the worst time ever to start prepping supplies for trying to survive possible fallout/famine/civil and economic collapse in the us. I don't think this will happen super soon and maybe not because of this current ukraine situation but i'm sure it will eventually... Hope you guys saved your points dizzys for when the emp's go off.
  20. She runs but smokes 😞 going to do a quick re ring style rebuild soon but first have my girlfriends 521 to take care of… why is it sitting so high in the front you think? Haven’t looked into it yet but I’m sure it’s not lowered in the back yet its got kind of a "cali rake"
  21. https://books.apple.com/us/author/tom-monroe/id375367526 Tom monroe has written a wide variety of books... Don't think it's the same tom but thought this was funny. 🤣
  22. that's good information, we ended up already just re-ordering the plug and play 521 cylinders on ebay.
