makya
Not that kind! I need to find out what Datto trannies were the shortest for the l20 bell pattern. auto or stick can be used, so I'm not that picky. so, what do you know? Quote Link to comment
Llittle_Llama
are you making a custom driveshaft and just need a short tranny? what is it going in? Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
Pure speculation here but...i believe most Datsun's that came with an L 20 motor & were stick shifts came w/ 5 speeds. & arent most 5 speeds considered "long tails" ? There are both "short" & "long" tail 4 speeds though. Datzenmike or Datsunaholic would know for sure. Quote Link to comment
makya
It's for the 4x, I'm cutting the frame at the back of the cab & doing a 1 link front and rear w/ coils on 36" super swampers. I need a short transmission to allow for the engine to set back 4" and have enough room under the cab for the transmission and divorced dana 20 transfer case. I have a 4 speed now, I'm just looking to see if there is anything shorter. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
These are about 26" long and are considered short tails. STANDARDS F4W63 4spd '68-'73 510, not really strong enough for an L20B. F4W63A 4spd '74-'77 710, '78-'81 HLA10 ('78-'79 have the L bolt pattern, Z after '80) F4W71A 4spd '70-71 240z F4W71B 4spd '71-'76 240z, 260z FS5W63A 5spd '77-'78 200sx, '78-'81 HLA10 (option), stronger than the F4W63 but not as strong as the FS5W71B. FS5W71B 5spd '80-86.5 720s. often found on 4X4s, I don't know what years had them, the '80 would be an L bolt pattern, all other years would need the front half changed to an L bolt pattern. datsunaholic
Actually, Pac, even with the L20B the 4-speed was by far the more common transmission. The SHORTEST L-series transmission was the one used in cars, like the 510, 610, and 1st Generation 200SX (76-79). But they are significantly weaker than the 4-speed you have now. Not sure you want to put a transmission that's more likely to grenade on a 4X4. There is a hard-to-find option of using the "short" 4X4 transmission from the later-year 720s, but those would have the NAPS-Z front case so you would have to build a frankenstein tranmission (front case of a L-series 71-series 5-speed and the extension housing off the 720 4X4 5-speed.) So if I build another LZ22 I could use the "short" 720 5speed? did the later year 720's have a divorced transmission? Even If I change over to a Nissan Transfer Case, I need the ability to run it flat so the bottom of the truck can have a full belly skidplate. With a Divorced transfer case I can do that easily. sdsurf
Ok I was going to start my own but I will piggy back here... What was the 4spd in a 72 truck (521)? F4W63? Also I heard there is a 5spd non dogleg, short transmission that will be a direct swap for the 521 4spd. Is this true or was he confused? Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
The 521 used a F4W63 with a bolt-on flange output. The 5-speed non-dogleg short transmission was probably a 720 4X4 transmission (which means it would have no speedometer drive). But it's not a direct bolt in, and all I've seen were NAPS-Z (the 720 had a L20B in 1980, but all the transmission I saw in those were long). There is no such thing as a direct bolt in 5-speed for a 521, because all 5-speeds have the rear mount in a slightly different (further rearward) position vs the stock 4-speed. Quote Link to comment

You can bore out the tail housing and insert the speedometer gear. http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm179/kwoo510/65%20L320/Progress/720%20Tranny%20Mod/DSCN2132.jpg[/img]"] http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm179/kwoo510/65%20L320/Progress/720%20Tranny%20Mod/DSCN2152.jpg[/img]"] Edited February 19, 2009 by kwoo510 Quote Link to comment
