Rope Seal Excitement

Hey guys.  I was having an issue with the rear seal on my new engine.

I would have bet the house that the rope seal we put in was correct

I looked through the threads and it is repeated over and over that the seal they are using is 3/8".  I have attached a picture of the Best Gasket 3/8" rope seal and the groove it is going in, which is .234".  That's not going in, but the groove is 3/8" deep.  Also, the previous seal appeared to have too much clearance.  Was able to get a feeler gauge in there

Does anyone have a part number or description to get for this seal?

Yeah, good luck with that. Have you tried a local machine shop?

This came up on Summit's site - https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/rear-main-seals?SortBy=BestKeywordMatch&SortOrder=Ascending&keyword=rope+seal

There are lip seal conversions for various cars that originally came with rope seals or no rear seals. MGTD, Austin Healey Sprite, etc. What is the size of your crank journal? And the size of the groove in the block?

May want to see a photo of the Nissan packaging before purchasing.

I agree, I'd go with the one from the dealer .... I put that up because it showed an extra o ring or something.

I didn't know if that's something that comes with the one from the dealer or if it's important... I killed the link but left the picture....

China has a 5 thousand year history of graft and corruption and today they are the biggest counterfeiters in the world. 'Genuine' Nissan packaging and labels shouldn't be a problem. Ebay and Amazon do nothing to stop counterfeit products.

I know nothing bout the Britt stuff, but the E1 & J-Series Datsun engines have a flanged crankshaft. Any change to a lip seal would have to be a split-seal.

Yes, it would need a split seal. I think it was the motor I built for my dad's MGTD that we used a split lip seal. I remember doing it, but don't remember which motor we did it on...
