Service Manual question

Recommended Posts

Afternoon gents

Is it at all possible to get a PDF copy of the revision 1 service manual for the 1985 Nissan 720?

If not, anyone who does have one, Could I get any relevant information about the Steering Gear assembly, as I'm going to be rebuilding it and need to know any torque specs, if any. Ive found diagrams online but I need more information to not make any unnecessary mistakes

Why are you rebuilding the steering box? If it's sloppy, it could be worn. Oversize balls are used in a "professional" rebuild to take up some of that slack. Talking to my sales guy at https://redheadsteeringgears.com/  he was telling me they have custom balls made in increments of hundredths of thousandths (that's .0001") increments for the perfect fit.

At the moment I'm just looking into play in the assembly. I have access to tools to make those components relatively easily. A 5 axes CNC Mill can do a lot. Outside of that, I'm replacing seals. I'm a Millwright, this isn't anything too out of the ordinary for me. I've never had to do a power steering gear assembly, but first time for everything.

The assembly is leaking out the bottom near the seal of the pitman arm. Nissan still makes those seals, so I bought all of them, and planned to replace them regardless, but while I have the assembly off, I thought prudent to check the entire thing, as I have zero intention to buy another set of seals. Those were not cheap.

Had a quick look at Redhead Steering and I will say I'm pretty impressed with their shtick. But from what I can see, excluding Toyota, they don't touch anything non American, I may be wrong, I hope I am, because I would be sending my piece to them instead. Sent them a quote, we will see what I get back.

If there is slop in the steering first eliminate the steering ball joints, the idler arm and the wheel bearing pre-load as contributing factors. There are at least 4 ball joints, 2 wheel bearing adjustments and an idler arm if all are worn and contribute just 0.015" (four thicknesses of newspaper) each, the 16.5 :1 steering ratio (assuming power steering, manual is 19:1) magnifies this to 1 3/4" of back and forth on the steering wheel. This does not take into account the steering gear box play adjustment that may be off also.

I have 85 Nissan 720 Service manual I bought from the dealer long ago for 75 bucks.I also have a 85, mine is a 4x4.I had it for 28 years with 380,000 miles on it and never had to mess with that,I hope I never have to.I did put a power steering high pressure hose on it over 25 years ago,Nissan still had them, but found a new one from NAPA for 100 bucks,I think Nissan had them for 200.Way before the internet was around.I am now looking at my book.I will download a few pictures,if you need more,I will send them. They have torque specs.Nissan Still has new power steering belt tensioners.I just put one on mine not long ago,you can see it on my page.I bought the complete part set.xzb6a48.jpg

Not sure if I have 1985 as a scanned file but here is 1986:

How did you scan that Dguy210.Maybe I can do the 85 and post it.

I didn't scan that particular one (I've scanned many others though) just happened to have a file for it.

2 ways to scan those:

1. use a flatbed scanner and scan one page at a time and assemble a PDF. Non-destructive to the book but requires more effort (my preferred method).

2. cut the binding and feed the stack of pages into a scanner/copier type machine. This is how many of these were scanned. Usually the wiring diagrams in the back being multipage pull-outs don't get included.

Also, I found I do have a link to a 1984 manual missing the first 10 or so pages, built this off some images on some other site into one file.

What if we already have oversized balls? 🤔
