Can is almost ready to pull.

 

 

Ordered Mike Ks front disc brake kit today. Also ordered the ka24 mount brackets.

 

Tomorrow is another day.....

Made a trip to pick and pull this morning. Found an 87' d21 2wd. Scored hubs, rotors and calipers.

The goon may not happen. No paper work or title. It's all on the seller now. Still on stand by.

 

 

I have a carb I could throw on it. Change fluids, clean plugs, look at the points, blow the dust off and your ready to bogey.

Back on big red. 

Building a cab stand on casters. The interior is out, front and rear wire harness out. Still tagging dash/interior harness. 

 

The floor pans and cab looks really good.

 

Pulled the heater assembly. The po reported the fan was inop. Jumped it to a battery and confirmed the fan motor is toast.

So the front brakes are sorted. Now suspension and steering. 

 

Will coil overs and ball joints make that much difference over stock?

 

I'd  like to do power steering.

Is there an affordable option?

 

 

Found this and a few extra pipes under the cabin right side frame. A little research shows it as a two way hyd valve. Parts for a dump bed?

Been a bit distracted the last couple of days but got to spend the day on big red.

 

Really want to thank the contributors to this forum. I'm not doing anything that hasn't been done before. Been reading and studying some builds and it does help.  

 

Got the cab ready to pull, I think, will find out win I lift it off. Unlike the bed mount bolts the cab bolts are not quite cooperating. Douched em down with pb blaster and letting them sit overnight.

 

First thing tomorrow I'm building my cab stand. Going with the same idea Tank used. 2x4 frame with 4x4 legs on casters. Building in a bit higher for belly access. I think it was ebmon602 has everything on wheels. Sure makes it easy for repositioning when needed.

 

I'm planning on lifting the cab solo with my engine hoist. Gonna use the rear seat belt mount and cabin door mounts as hard points. Using chain this time, that rope on the bed removal was kinda sketchy.  I'll take pics and post.

 

The 510 wagon deal is still alive. Talked to them today and they found the owner or somebody or something. We'll see.

LSpent the morning building the body rack. Trip to McDaniels for hardware and casters, a stop at Jack in the Box and we're on.

Had done some measuring previously so I rechecked and guestimated 40 inches wide by 80 inches long. Cut myself some boards and laid it out on the floor. Predrilled some holes and used beefy wood screws.

 

 

Installed some casters and flipped it over.

Added some rails and guest again about shimming. 9

 

 

Let's get tha cab pulled.

 

So I ended up using the lower door hinge bolt holes and side wall seat belt attach bolt as lifting points.

 

put some pressure on the hoist then did some shaking and wiggling.

I was gonna do it solo but why screw someing up when I had the help.

 

Lifting the cab to clear the frame she balanced the front end and I rolled the hoist clear. Positioning the rack under the cab l slowly lowered the cab into place.

 

Yep, it used to be orange.

need to add a lower beam on the rack and nail down those fwd shims but it's riding pretty.

 

Now the fun begins.

Since this is my 1st attempt at a restoration a lot of pictures are being taken. I'm hoping this will help with putting everything back together.

Saw some videos on king pin refurb.

Big hammer is ready.

 

 

Looks like I'll not be reusing a few fuel and brake lines.

 

No spare tire rack. Seen fuel tanks mounted there.

Not sure about rear brake upgrade yet. 

 

Gonna finish stripping the frame, get er cleaned up and start with the front. Planning disc brakes, keeping the king pins and modifying the upper shock tower for coil overs.

 

Did some more looming at the cab.

 

Fwd left cab mount pad is gonna need some work the rest look good.

 

 

 

Both rocker panels are pretty nasty. Freaking sheet metal repair. If I had a strong point it damn sure ain't sheet metal.

 

Finally getting my shop/garage cleaned up.

Got the frame mostly clean today.

 

 

Foamy degreaser spray worked on the light crap. Scraped a bit then broke out the brush.

 

 

The wife came out and enlighted me on something or other and told me to smile.

looks like this has been replaced.

 

I'm still leaning ka24. Appreciate your input. Since you made the pictures work....

 

 

He's back in the barn and just a little soggy.

 

Got a few more things to remove from the frame and I'll be waiting parts for brake fitment.

No probs there, I got weeks of parts cleanup.

Wow!! I can’t believe how much work you guys have done. I’m so glad he went to you. Can’t wait to see him rebuilt. 
I had no idea I was driving around with a broken fuel line! Those gouges on either side of the cab was from pushing him onto a car dolly from up a hill and he went over it and got mounted on the cab instead. Yeah, stupid idea that ended poorly.

Looks like the stock H-190 differential. A '76 KC manual or automatic should have a 4.375

I agree. He's in great shape. 

Still in the teardown stages now.

Putting it back together stage is approaching.

Got all the brake and fuel lines removed last night.

 

Inspected the frame and found some minor damage.

 

 

Easy repair.

 

 

Right rear frame. We match that to the left.

 

 

Mild surface corrosion. Easy treat and paint.

 

Been really lucky, only broke two bolts on the tear down and cut 3 brake tubes with rounded connectors.

 

Feeling good about this build. Only hope I remember how to put it back together. 

 

Spending some time today on shop clean up.

 

Got some idea's on keeping the frame mobile after it's stripped.

hope that goon works out! They should make it easier to acquire titles to old classic cars that are just rotting anyways. So many Datsuns that have been crushed or cut up that people like us could have been cruising hope title situation gets handled well for you.

So close to having the frame stripped. Down to lower control arm and separating the king pin, torsion bars and rear end crap.

 

Speaking of separating the king pin and lower control arm.....

How do I get it off?

 

 

I have the tapered pin nut loose but didn't want to hammer on it to hard.

While we're  at it how about those torsion bars. Was surprised when I separated the links, some pressure on those bars. What about pulling them, anything special about it?

 

Help please.

 

I have a service manual downloaded but trufuly I've yet to look at it. Figured I'd might need it going back together tho.

 

 

Got the cab stashed out of the way giving all kinds of room.

 

All right guys not sure if I screwed the pooch on the torsion bar set up.
