Clint760
I was wandering if anyone has swapped a sr20 det into their 620 and kept the original 620 transmission? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The L series transmission has a different bolt up pattern than the SR. The 71B 4 and 5 speeds from '74 would not stand up under that load even if you managed a front case swap from an SR 5 speed. Get an SR's 71C transmission. 2 Quote Link to comment
5t341tH
why would you want to? 1 Quote Link to comment
Icehouse
The only benefit of the OG trans is so you don't have to mess with the driveline and mount. A few burnouts and I agree with Mike. You will want the SR trans for strength. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 71B was able to handle the power of a similar year '78 280z... I guess about 160-170 hp???? Eventually it was used with the '83 zx non turbo so 180???? maybe close to 200??? I don't know. As future 4 cylinder and others were increasing in displacement and power the 71B was retired and the 71C first used on the '84 300zx VG30 (non turbo) and fazed in, in '86.5 on all other vehicles. It approximately is capable of about twice the power handling as the 71B. 300zx owners have replaced blown up T-5 turbo 5 speeds with the non turbo 71Cs and find they will stand up to them very well. The 71Cs are all shorter (in varying amounts) than the 71B. 1 Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
I have owned a few 510s with over 200 hp and back then we only ran the Z or ZX 5 speeds. I never blew one up. 1 Quote Link to comment

I thought the 71C is longer then the 71B? 9 minutes ago, Stoffregen Motorsports said: I have owned a few 510s with over 200 hp and back then we only ran the Z or ZX 5 speeds. I never blew one up. Yeah I've never killed a trans in any car besides wearing out bearings. Just depends on the dude behind the wheel. Lots of SR guys kill the stock trans drifting and playing around. 1 Quote Link to comment
Turbosauce74
Fitting the trans is easy, I just modified the stock trans crossmember, took me maybe 2-3 hours to get it straight and the engine angled properly. 2 Quote Link to comment
Clint760
Was this with the sr20 engine ? Did you need to use a trans adapter plate? Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
It is a rear wheel drive version and usually comes with a 5-speed behind it. Quote Link to comment
