tekkjosen
(Part 3) Removed this as well :) And wondered what this was in the master brake cylinder ? looks like clumped wet salt or something :P is this just old brakefluid and corrosion ? :) A bit grumsy filter, will clean the assembly before I put it on again :) Looked much better this one :) Had forgotten the plate between the engine and the gearbox when I put on the flywheel, so cleaned it up and put it on and tightend the flywheel again Put loctite on the bolts 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Nice work. That is a ton cleaning you've gotten done. And yes, in English that is a steering gear box. 1 Quote Link to comment

I guess ill continue taking it down to bare metal and getting it ready for paint What parts are you looking for ? Actually seems abit like used parts aren't so rare here in Norway suprisingly, haven't looked so much for fenders and bodyparts and stuff wich probably are harder to find especially for the 711 chassi, but engines and extras aren't that rare imo :) Would love to see the progress on your build... to bad with the pics problems :/ Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
Got a brand new choke wire in the mail yesterday that I bought from a guy here in Norway for the Nikki carb with manuel choke :) Back home in the weekend, so will hopefully get some work done today ! :) Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
02.04.16 Got some small work done this evening :) Have painted the engine bay earlier just with the antirust primer, thought that was good enough for now, because I didn't think I would paint over it before I did the whole car, and that won't probably be before next winter again. But was told that I had to paint over the primer, that it wasn't enough with just the antirust primer ? Doesn't like to paint over when it's not gonna be the finish, but think I will paint the engine bay in a similar blue spray can paint as the rest of the car and just sand it down and use bodyfiller spray when I'm going to repaint the whole car. So won't look any good for now, but main priority is to take the rust and make it ready for EU so I can have licence plates on it :) Looks like some spots where the paint haven't dried yet, but painted it for almost a week ago, so don't know what makes it look like this.. mabye bad cleaning at these spots ? :) Sanded lighlty down with some 800 paper and cleaned, covered and painted, wanted to paint this white and the rest of the engine bay blue :) 1. layer Will let it dry until tomorrow, then I can sand down the rest an hopefully have enough paint to cover a couple of layers with blue paint :) Not to far away from the engine color, more like between the engine color and oil filter color :) Also I was actually heading on a couple of hours drive this morning to purchase a used welding machine, told the seller yestarday I could come down and pick it up early this morning, but unluckily someone came and bought it late in the evening yesterday, so that was a bit of a bummer today :hmm: But found a brand new kemppi welding machine today me and my dad might buy, will just do some more research on it and then place an order :) so anyways, will have a welding machine in the nearest future now ! so I finally can start welding the real bad rust ! Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
06.04.16 Painted the engine bay with the blue paint in the weekend, had just enough paint to do about one and a half layer, so bought some more yesterday and got it finnished painting :) Sanded it nicely down with some 800 paper and cleaned it and painted :) Big contrast from original color, but better than the red one tho :) and will repaint it when I'm going to repaint the whole car later :) Quote Link to comment
Boundish
Fantastic progress ! 1 Quote Link to comment
Coda
02.04.16 Got some small work done this evening :) Will let it dry until tomorrow, then I can sand down the rest an hopefully have enough paint to cover a couple of layers with blue paint Loving this paint scheme! The blue and white will look nice under the hood. Quote Link to comment

Eagle_Adam
That engine bay looks great! Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
That engine bay looks great! Thanks ! :) but looking closer on the surface it's not so nice :P alot of small scratches and marks from the grinder, but the paint's just temperarly, will go over with sprayfiller and sand down much nicer when I repaint  (next winter i guess) Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
11.04.16 (part 1) Took the masking off and got a look on the whole bay :) Actually loved the color combo, and think when I repaint I will use a blue color colse to the original but with a little stronger blue color in it ! :) Decided to mount the connection box, painted and clean :) Dirty connections and looked like it was bad connection between them, so started with cleaning the connections with electric clean, compressed air, a toothbrush and steelbrush  And went over all the "O" connections with steelbrush ' Glad I put all the screws and small bits in little boxes and wrote on them ! couldn't have remembered where everything was going without it :P Re did the connection to the bat. pole to. Dismantled a cable about 10 cm in and were still dirty so got it changed with a new one :) Mounted 1 Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
(part 2) Used a steelwire to get the cables through the "cable trunking" (?) all the cables have been going on the outside till now, so will use the cable trunking from now :) Btw is this common on most cars ? can't remember I've seen it so often :) The old cable was connected with another one, but looks like an aluminium wire, not the best combo to connect copper with aluminium when they "eat" eachother as I've understood, but easy to get to and didn't have any alu wires now, so just connected them again :) Want to weld the hole in the engine bay before I put in the engine, going to place an order on a welding machine tomorrow :) ended up with a Kemppi Minarcmig Evo 200A i think it was called :) Quote Link to comment

tekkjosen
28.04.16 A small update over the last weeks :) Finally got the welding machine last week ! :) Me and my dad did some testing with it when we welded some parts on a wagon for it and a little steel table, so have gotten a little feeling on how it is :) I will buy some steel sheets tomorrow and try to start welding some rust in this weekend when I get home :) Will start with a few plates in the floor I think, so it doesn't have to look so nice :P and then take the hole in the engine bay so I can put the engine in  Also I probably won't get so much time to work on the datsun this month, just started the "russe celebration" a week ago that continues to May 18. And have used some of the time till now to work on our "russe van" A 1978 ford transit with an Essex V4 engine :P So hopefully the work I will be doing on the datsun the rest of the month and start of the next won't be work done while I'm drunk :P Quote Link to comment

tekkjosen
I had a Essex 3 liter V6 in my 78(mk3) Capri in Germany. Car was FUN!!!!!!! Nice ! :) I don't doubt it was fun ! It's a 2l v4 in the transit, with about 70 hp :P But a cheap and unique car from the rest of the chevrolet vans most of the russ are driving here  Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
25.05.16 (Part 1) Update over the last weeks, most of it's done the past days :) Started on the passenger floor to try to weld in a plate, but used such a thin plate, so struggled a long time with burning through and welding it shut again, floor was already thin where I was welding and used same thickness on plate, but should have used much thicker :) But at least I got some practice out of it :) Might let this be, but will use a thicker plate on the rest, mabye 0,9 mm or 1mm :) Can spot some tiny holes here and there that I didn't weld over again Started planning the rest of the floor, hoped the steel right under the "bump" in the right of the pic was good, so I could just cut a straight line from right to left and change the plate down to the floor :) The steel looked okay so will replace all under the "bump" and to the floor :) But as I was starting on this I got some guidance from a friend on how to proceed on all the rust on the right in the front, that I didn't quite know how to do myself :) This is one of the worst places of rust on the car I think, so after some guidance I started here instead :P Cutted out the worst and started grinding around :) Someplaces it was 3 plates on top of eachother where the front plate was like half rusted through, the middle plate was all rusted like this : But the rear plate was mostly in an okay condition :) Went over with the steelbrush as well Started with welding the plates in the bottom and filling the hole I made with the grinder, I see that now when i look at the pictures I might have had the welding machine settings made a bit to cold, but turned it up after some welding :) Grinded down again the worst bits :) Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
(Part 2) Started making the plate to cover it  first in cardboard :) used 1,2mm btw Then finally covering up the hole in the engine bay :) Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
(Part 3) Don't care to much on how it looks, will be covered by the battery box anyway  Also wanted to strengthen the area abit, so used a steelbrush between the plates and then welded the top plate to the plate behind :) Then I cut out a plate and welded it to top and bottom plate :) Turned the settings to some hotter welds here, so think the welds at the bottom fills out abit better than the ones on the right side of the plate. Also had some company from our two dogs yesterday when I was working on the car ^_^ Was as good as finished, had just 2 or 3 spot welds left on the bottom when we were all out of gass :o Didn't think it would go this quick, but my dad spotwelded alot of 10mm steel the other day, so think it went alot of gass there. Luckily I was finished with what I had to do now, will get e refill in the weekend I think :) New type of art, should mabye have left it like this :P Sanded it down on this side and went over with a steelbrush on the other side and made it ready for some paint :) Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
(part 4) Doesn't have any blue left, but heading down to the apartment again this evening, so will buy today or tomorrow and try to paint it tomorrow after work :) When I get it painted I can start putting the L16 in ! Will probably grind down the front first and paint there to tho :) Saw the car had lost some steelbits after sweeping the floor :P Also took some parts off the L14 while the paint was drying so I could put that away :) But wondered about this water intake/outtake :) What fuction has this ? And can it be right that it's all empty in here on the L16 engine ? Also the waterline that's mounted on the side on the L14 is shut on the L16 Is it some sort of open/close valve or thermostat or something ? :) Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Mighty fine rust repairs! 1 Quote Link to comment
bilzbobaggins
That's the thermostat bypass hose assembly. It keeps water circulating around the thermostat so that cold water does not set at the thermostat while the rest of the system is hot. Just use the housing off the l14 on the l16 and keep that system. I plan on adding it to my l16 at some point. Right now I added three holes to the thermostat to get the water to flow. 1 Quote Link to comment
