tekkjosen
That's the thermostat bypass hose assembly. It keeps water circulating around the thermostat so that cold water does not set at the thermostat while the rest of the system is hot. Just use the housing off the l14 on the l16 and keep that system. I plan on adding it to my l16 at some point. Right now I added three holes to the thermostat to get the water to flow. Okay, thx for answer :) Will move the housing over from the L14 to the L16 then :) Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
27.05.16 Picked up more blue paint yesterday :) Got it painted this morning removed the horn and the headlight holders this evening and just got started on removing the surface rust, will take the rest tomorrow and hopefully get it painted :) Also removed the wire harness And got my hands on a couple of these the other day ! So thanks to member: ]2eDeYe for making and selling them B) Will put one somewhere on the car at least :) 1 Quote Link to comment

tekkjosen
01.05.16 (part 1) So got the rest of the surfae rust on the front removed the other day :) And of course most of it was in the worst places to get to like under the radiator bar if thats what the "bar/support" on the top is called ? But think I got most of it off :) Made it ready for some paint Was going to take off the thermostat housing from the L14, so went out to the barn where I put it away, and fuck..... Thought I had emptied it for oil before I put it away, had some oil dripping from it but thought it might just be some remains.... but it wasn't Hard to see on the pic but pretty sure it had poured out a couple of litres on the floor... happily I had layed down cardboard sheets as a floor and a few newspapers under the engine incase it would come something out, so everything was pretty soaked in oil :P But got it cleaned up and a new cardboard on top of newspapers to dry it all up :) Anyways, got the t.housing off with only one of the two screws snapping off  Happily didn't snap any on the L16  Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
(Part 2) Took off the waterline as well from the L14, didn't find the one from the L16 again :) Got the Oil, paint and rust removed from it Found the one for the L16 later, was identical as I hoped :) And got it painted Think the datsun got the red spots decease :/ Uses a quite cheap and shitty paint since it's just temporary, works all fine, with an okay result for a spray can, but heat is something it doesn't like at all... Just from the steelbrush on the drill on the other side it started to bubble and peel off on the other side because of the heat. Did get quite warm but didn't think it was that warm :/ But hope to get it sanded down tomorrow and painted :) Also when I got the bumber bracket off on the left side I saw it was a bit more rust than I thought at first after some knocking and scraping on it, so need to do that side as well, but not quite as bad as the right siide tho :) Will do this when we get a new bottle with gas, had some problems with deliverance, but think we will get a new one this weekend :) Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
09.06.16 Got the whole front sanded down, and started to paint, found out I just had enough for 1 layer of paint, so bought more paint couple days ago after I had some exams at school, and got it painted yesterday :) Also cleaned up some small parts for the engine while paint was drying :) Now I can start putting in the engine :) ending school tomorrow, and then I got about a week with vacation before I start working as an electrician apprentice ! Also got a new bottle of gas for the welding machine this weekend so then it's ready to continue the left side on the front and inside on the floor :) 2 Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
14.06.16 Have had some problems with the husky I had to figure out, so used a couple days on that, planned to work on the datsun two days ago, but ended up welding a new gate to our field with my dad from leftovers from water lines and steel tubes found around at home :P Was painted black today, so doesn't look that awful :P Ended up starting in the garage at almost 10 in the evening, started making the engine mounts ready for paint, but got so sleepy after 10 minutes so went back in  But got a little done today :) Wanted to clean these up a bit before installing Don't know if the whole assembly was originally covered in rubber, but was just a little left on the edges and a little on top so took it off Primed and painted And cleaned a bit up in the engine bay.. wanted to get off all the layers of oil and dirt on the steering gear and the rest, tried to get the steering gear off to clean it properly, but didn't manage to unscrew the nut on the underside since the whole gear was loose and jiggly, and couldn't get the steering gear arm off where it's mounted to the bushing without destroying the bushing. So with me jumping in and out from the engine bay trying to get it off, it got really messy in there with old oil and dirt that was really easy to see when everything I was standing on was white  (picture before the oil mess) But got the steering gear cleaned the worst off and mounted it to the wall again :) Took a quick wash to get rid off all the dirt in the engine bay Engine mounts in place  So can start putting in the engine tomorrow I hope and weld in the battery bracket, and weld the rust on the left front :) But I have a question about the priming of the oil pump. Read about it a while ago, sounded like alot of ways to prime the oil pump, but wondered if I could do it as easily as Mike says in this post ? :) Think it was from this topic : http://community.ratsun.net/topic/65730-do-you-need-to-prime-or-bleed-a-new-oil-pump/?hl=%2Bpriming+%2Boil+%2Bpump&do=findComment&comment=1222417 So it's good enough to fill the pump housing with oil and pull plugs and pour oil over cam and crank it ? :) And shouldn't be any problem with taking off the pump housing while it's in the car ? or should i get it ready before I put it in the car just ready to crank it ? Sounded like the easiest and quickest way i read about :) 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
I pour 50w all over the valve train and the whole timing chain assembly right before I try starting the motor. Disconnect the fuel supply, fill the oil pump with oil, and then crank the motor with the starter until oil light goes off. Hook fuel back up and try to start it. You have an L series, right? You can do the pump while it's in the car. 1 Quote Link to comment

You can do the pump while it's in the car. Do you pull plugs as well ? And it's alot of bad electrical inside the car I want to look at before I put in the dash again as well as alot of grinding and welding in the floor, so wanted to try to start the engine before I finished that. So If i don't look at the oil light I can just look for the oil coming from the cam right ? :) Yup, a L16 engine that's sat or at least 3 years told by the previous owner, but was told it started when they put it away :) 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I just pour all the oil in the pump Prime the fuel pump and the carb and START. should get pressure in about 15seconds. I sometime route a hose to the the front cover and pump more in that way where the oil filter is. 2 Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
Got to take a small visit to the garage today :) Scraped off the exhaust gasket :) Followed a new one on the full engine gasket kit I bought earlier, but was to small  Seemed to be the same size the exhaust was, so it didn't fit on the outside, will look more on it tomorrow, but tempting to just expand it with a file :P Got some brake lines sorted and mounted to the firewall again :) Cleaned up the brake master cylinder. Pretty gooie in one of the cups, hope it's not come to much in the lines. And mounted some more brake lines to the side wall :) Didn't get time to mount it all today, but I've got a friend to come help me put in the engine tomorrow ! :) better with a couple more hands and a couple more eyes at startup as well :D So will install the brake cylinder tomorrow and mount the rest of the brake lines so we can put in the engine without to much in the way :) Also I've found a daily driver car for the winter now (will let the datsun stay dry and comfy most of the winter ^_^ Have to test it out a couple of times, but won't use it on the salted roads :P) So have been talking with the seller over the phone a couple of days now, and decided to buy it ! car's set as sold :) It's a Volvo s60 2002 mod. awd 2,4T manual, and I've been watching the s60 market the past year and never seen an awd manual in Norway ! first one I've ever seen so think they're quite rare here ( are a few autos tho :) ) But it's like a 8 - 10 hour drive down there, so will take the airplane with a friend down there and drive it back home again :) leaving now on saturday ! so pretty excited about that :) Almost emptying my whole account and taking a small loan from my parents.... but don't worry the datto will still get it's parts, starting work on monday (as an apprentice tho, so can't expect the most pricey parts :P ) 1 Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
12.07.16 Hi, almost been a month since the last update now :hmm: And unfortunately I haven't done as much on the datsun that I hoped for. but here's a little update on what's happend the past month :) Started working as an electrician apprentice 3 weeks ago, on my 4th week now, so have used much of my energy and time on that :) Also picked up my new car 4 weeks ago i think it was ! B) Took a plane down to the car with a friend and drove it back home for an 8 hours trip :) About the datsun: I finally got the clutch centered and mounted the gearbox, and got it in the car :) I have almost been certain that the gearboxes are identical, so didn't see that the mounts from the gearbox to the "gearbox bar/support" (No idea what's it called in english) was different from the two gearboxes before it was all in  But swapped them over from the old to the new one. (it's the one to the left I'm using now and wich sat on the old g.box) As I have understood the L-series gearboxes came in two lengths ? and the one's pretty much longer than the other ? Cause when I mounted the "support bar" to the gearbox and mounted one of the sides to the car it didn't quite fit all the holes.. If I mount one side I can pull real hard on the other side and just barely make the holes match up on that side, haven't managed to put in a screw yet either, but can't think that this is right? So wondered if any of you could tell me if it's difference in the "support" thingys or if some of the g.boxes might be a tiny bit longer than others ? Haven't tried to mount the support directly to the car first and then lower the gearbox into that again, wich I might think would be easier. "Support Bar" Will also try to flip the gearbox mount in case it's not identical on both sides. Painted the battery plate a while ago, and spotwelded it in place two days ago :) Also I've changed my mind about having the EU control this summer. Planned to just make it ready for eu, and take all the rust and then spot paint over it with a similar blue color and drive it shabby the rest of the summer, and then strip it totally down in the winter and repaint it. But Since I got a car to drive now and not wanting to put all in and then out again just a couple months later, I've decided to finish it completely before EU control, hopefully sand much of it down and applying body filler this summer, much nicer to stay outside in the warm than inside in the wintercold later :) But since I've already started on the engine I will get that finished and running, so I can move it in and out of the garage, so can rather take out the engine and finish the engine room as one of the last things before repaint :) 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Progress is progress, even if it's slow. Support bar = transmission mount bracket/ tranny crossmember 2 Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
Over a month ago since the last update now  But got my driver license the 22. July on my birthday ! Almost didn't do anything on the Datsun for nearly a month after that <_< but began a couple of days ago, and used last night in the garage working on it again :) And got big inspiration to get it going again ! :P So here's what's done since last update :) Mounted the engine, got the tranny crossmember in place (think the rubber seals on the g.box bracket was formed/bent with the old transmission, so therefore it was so tricky to mount on the new one) Actually had to use a "tie down strap" and pulling it back against the rear axle to make it easier to match up the bolts on the crossmember alone under the car :P connected the driveline :) Cleaned the radiator and hose... was something similar to mud inside. Put on the exhaust and intake manifoils, and carburetor, and connected the throttle to it. Used the exhaust mani from the L14, wil maybe weld on a bolt on the broken one later if i don't come over a new mani before that :) L14 L16 Cleaned some parts before installing :) Mounted the fuel pump and fuel line to the carburetor.. Bought a new fuel filter after work today, so will attatch that later today and complete the fuel line :) Thermostat housing in place Another datsun thats a bit more modern  And a picture snack in the end :P A friend of mine just lowered his corolla and wanted to see how it looked with my wheels on, so tried them on :) 2 Quote Link to comment
q-tip
The stuff you found inside the radiator looks like a product called "stop leak". Its for coolant/head gasket leaks. 2 Quote Link to comment

Oh, Fu#@, can it be used for the radiator as well ? if it had a leak earlier ? or is it just meant for the engine ? :) Quote Link to comment
q-tip
People use it for many things, head gasket, heater core, thermostat seals, radiators. Or some times just because they think it's needs it. 1 Quote Link to comment
tekkjosen
Ok, thanks :) wondered cause I've got some damages on the radiator, so thought maybe prev. owner just used that if it was leaking :) Quote Link to comment

tekkjosen
27.08.16 Finished the fuel line with the new filter couple days ago and cleaned the alternator :) Used the next day to help out the guy with the 200sx, was the last day before we were going to test it drifting on a track  so spent the whole day/night in the garage :P Moved the oil cooler and then I just had to prioritize painting a risisng sun on the fender after that :P Didn't measure or anything just taped it up quickly, but looked ok (because drift car  ) Finished in the garage about 2.30 in the night and up on work again 6.30 and right to the drift track after work, so was pretty tired in the evening  Sat tucked in between the intercooler and radiator, so was afraid it din't get enough air Cut out and placed it on the lower right side behind the bumper Went pretty low, but still a bit higher than the intercooler :) Got it tested the next day, and was working great and got it tested a couple rounds before he drove off the track a little and into a bump on the grass and busted the oil cooler so all the oil we changed the day before puked out all in once :bye: But was a fun day anyways ! :) Quote Link to comment
