Wooden wings fell off on landing and the tank drove away. Both crew members survived but no further tests were carried out. The tank was dropped earlier than scheduled because the bomber engines overheated. This was not the only attempt to develop a flying tank. American designer Christy designed an aluminum flying tank with integral wings and prop that could take off and land. US Army was not interested, so he sold it to Russia. Never heard from again. wayno
There are not a lot of choices if the engine dies on one of these, and there are no second chances either. 43 minutes ago, VFR800 said: 2 Quote Link to comment
VFR800
Hence why I would never put myself in one UNLESS possibility of death was already happening. 3 Quote Link to comment

A fellow worker in 1964 fell in love with my 1964 Corvair engine especially when I told him there was a turbocharged version. He called GM and asked many questions re weight and center of gravity, GM asked "why" and when told he wanted to put one in a gyrocopter he was cut off, The rep told him that GM had enough problems with Ralph Nader without facing grief when "Corvairs" started falling out of the sky. flyerdan
The gyrocopter is always in autorotation mode while flying, so if it lost power it would just land normally, providing you don't stall the main rotor. A lot of people auger in with fixed wings trying to extend the glide. Vancraft in Scappose made a version that was pretty popular. 3 1 Quote Link to comment

Logical. 🙂 When I was a teen one of our family doctors (who was quite eccentric but a GREAT doctor) had lived in Papua New Guinea and had had to fly in planes to get to patients. The ratio of plane crashes then was HIGH and he always used to say "never fly in anything that has not got two engines" Man he had some awesome stories of things he saw there in PNG. MikeRL411
2 B58 Hustlers and an Atlas ICBM ! The front B58 may, just may, be carrying a mockup Skybolt air launched ICBM. Defense Secretary McNamarra cancelled the joint US/British Skybolt without coordination with London. The solid fuel Skybolt had problems with temperature cycling of the solid fuel from sea level to high altitude, This is probably a Convair publicity photo since Convair was prime on both Atlas and B58. 3 Quote Link to comment
J-Luis
Thanks for identifying the Atlas ICBM. I was trying to figure out what it could be. The similar color scheme is misleading; it looks like an accessory. But WHERE would they put it!?!? It looks too big and too heavy to fit on the bottom or the top. 4 Quote Link to comment

Hopefully you re kidding or do you really think that an Atlas missile could be flown and launched from an airplane? The Atlas was ground launched from a "coffin" or silo pad. 2 Quote Link to comment
