I always use the old ring to clean the ring grooves.  I break a ring and grind the to a sharp point.  Then use this to scrape the carbon and gunk out.

 

 

I usually do also.....but there was so much caked up that the thickness of the ring was too much to get a good scrape.......

.........I did eventually do this to make sure the rings were free and clear.....

Ya.......life has been rough for a few of us down here......

 

Datsuns are always here for us though......

You RTV the seal OD of the seal? Have you had them leak? 

 

It's an interesting technique. I could imaging it being a mofo to get that out of there next time.

...................all the time.....

 

...........easier to get out than a petrified seal..........
