ggzilla
Looks like severe pinging caused a broken ring land. So not blown up? Quote Link to comment

Looks like severe pinging caused a broken ring land. weird thing is i test drove this truck when it was FS on CL and it diddn't ping then, Jessi met him at PCC and it diddn't ping then.......... but when he brought it over it was knocking like a son of a bitch! wayno
You cannot drive them when they are pinging(another word for it is knocking), otherwise it will end up with a knock of another type which is terminal. :( Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
It was sill running so not blown up. 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
so what causes this? just pinging? Detonation is the abnormal burning of the fuel air after the spark plug has fired. The flame should travel across the combustion chamber from the plug to all points at a set rate until it is all burned and the pressure increasing with it. Unfortunately with detonation, as the temp and pressures begin to increase, the remaining gas and air can reach a point where it will combust by itself, producing an intense pressure spike of short duration. Think of someone giving you a very a hard push or shove and then condensing that same energy into a hard hammer blow. Yeah the hammer will kill you. This spike can break spark plug electrodes and ring lands and will pit the piston tops. Passenger car pistons are roughly 12-15% silicon content making them brittle and basically closer to glass. Detonation will chip pieces off them and they will appear to be eroded or sand blasted usually on the side furthest from the spark plug. On an L piston that would be the driver's side. Once chewed away exhaust will begin blowing past the rings and will over heat them, scuffing the piston and cylinder walls. Too much ignition advance at high RPMs and heavy throttle can do this. Poor octane gas for the compression you are running. Overheated motor run at high RPMs and throttle can cause detonation.. 1 Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, it is caused by pinging. 2 Quote Link to comment
