KiloTango1200
You could make a slide hammer easily with some allthread, nuts/washers, maybe some pipe. Just need something with weight to it to slide along it...maybe the head of a 5lb sledge 1200.com says if nothing else works, turn the drum upside down, thread it loosely and use it as a slide hammer. Will try that tomorrow. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
You should've asked me. We have a slide hammer with a special attachment that Tim made just for this purpose. ^_^ 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
If you don't want to come get it, this is what Tim did... He got the cheapo slide hammer from Harbor Freight, bolted a piece of 6" long angle iron to it, drilled two holes in the iron that will slide over the studs, then spin on two lug nuts. 1 Quote Link to comment

KiloTango1200
Strapped down the differential. All the information on axle removal I found was with the differential still on the car. My first attempt with the pry bar and hammer moved the differential a lot. The kinetic energy was going to waste. Flipped the drum backwards and had about 2" of travel for the "slide hammer", but had plenty of weight. Damn if it didn't work. After a wimpy first test hit, I really whacked it the 2nd time and it popped right out. Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
Both of the axles are out. They are pretty ugly and the differential spit out quite a bit of water during the process. It had about 5" of rain fall on it in the weeks before I got it to my shop. The water was very clear with no traces of rust. Hopefully the LSD pumpkin is still OK. The yoke bolt is pointed at the ceiling and soaking in penetrating oil. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Any pics of the diff itself? Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
Any pics of the diff itself? Not quite there yet. Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
I let the yoke nut soak in penetrating oil for a day during my bi-weekly trip to Childress. Never taken a differential apart and not really getting good instructions on the internet. Sometimes you just gotta wing it and take pictures to know how it goes back together. The yoke nut seems like the next logical thing to come off. Now how do I remove it. So far the tie down strap has worked well. The nut came loose easily. Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
I thought the yoke would need a puller, but it came off easily. It appears that T957 is stamped in the differential cover. Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
There is RTV sticking out everywhere along the diff to front housing mount. Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
Finally got the pumpkin out. Didn't know it was bolted into the front housing. The axle bearings. Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
Got some signs of rust inside the diff. Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
I just hope that the pumpkin is not trashed. The diff housing. Lots of nasty stuff. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Neat that it also has the Nismo side axle baffles in it. 1 Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
yeeeeaaaack, looks a bit rough. What's with the pinion marks in the lsd carrier? 2 Quote Link to comment
KiloTango1200
yeeeeaaaack, looks a bit rough. What's with the pinion marks in the lsd carrier? I was hoping you could tell me. If worse comes to worse, I have 4 1200 differentials. If nothing works, then it's a 8.8 Ford. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Noticed I could enlarge your pics. Definitely looks like the pinion has been hitting it. What's the cracked looking part in this pic (bottom left corner)? Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Definitely looks like the pinion has been hitting it. Yeah, betting that was a noisy sumbitch... 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
But the good news is, it's already clearanced itself so it's probably fine now. 1 Quote Link to comment

KiloTango1200
Got some rust going on inside the diff. The bearings are questionable. The pinion gear has definitely made friends with the pumpkin. All is well now. Quote Link to comment
