I was thinking maybe it was from folks messing with them when they shouldn't. Like throwing away pieces of cooling tin they have deemed unnecessary, Or building them for more power but not addressing any other issue that may now make it run hotter and so on. I have built a bunch of them and never have issues.

Yeah, those are definite causes.  Especially the issue with missing tin.  Seems like the first thing people do sometimes is throw away the cooling tin, because they don't understand what it's for.

Shut yer damn dirty mouth!

My experience with SAAB is that they are incredibly reliable. I was sad to see them go. I have only known a handful of SAAB owners though.

My first love is the SAAB 9000 before my 521 it was all I owned and once i have the money I will again. Only car I have gotten to 130+ mph. My Datsun maxes out at 85...

The bad rep comes from newer VWs. They tend to last very well and be pretty reliable.........within the warranty period.

After that they can get bad, fast. There is far too much plastic in them, and not quality plastic, shitty plastic. They have electrical issues a lot of the time around 150,000+ miles, I have two friends with interior plastics that keep getting worse and worse, and I am talkin about 2005 and 2003 cars, not that old.

They also produce barely any power, the current GTI is rated at like 211hp, with a turbo!!!!!, thats pathetic when some MFGs (cough cough.....Honda) is putting out an NA with 207 HP and getting 32 MPG with it.

My drag truck would probably do 180 up it, not sure I would want it as a daily driver though.

get a SAAB 9000, 35 mpg, 130 mph, I drove from Santa Rosa CA to La Pine OR on a tank of gas, you can fit a couch in the back, and they never die.

Yeah, never had a new one before. It just seems all I hear about on old VW is how they can't even be made fast or they fall apart like a fat kid riding a bigwheel. When you DO make them fast, everyone asks what motor swap you did.

^they dont weigh diddly dick though, lol.

I will be the first to say that ANY engine can be built to be reliable and make good power. I think they just get a bad rep cause people build them wrong and screw them up really bad because they used to be so cheap to get ahold of. Everyone can build an engine, only some can build it right.

WTF someone make with the Pr0n!!
