Danfiveten's Preserved 510 (yes finally revealing)

Recommended Posts

Drove to the zoo, it was fine, came home, loaded family up and started having issues again. I had shut her off, got kids, came back, loaded up, start and hesitation again.  So took the other car.  Came back later and she was hesitating still, drove her a bit by myself hesitation stops again.  Has to be something in the tank, sediment, rust.....something, since it does it at random times, and starts to act up once the weight changes in the car putting it at a different angle.  Going to put the kids in the back again tomorrow, if issues immediatly again...well its helping point me in the right direction....or the car just hates my family!

Shes been running better. If she sits and idles she has issues, dumping to much fuel, need carb adjusted.

So got my new resevoir tank all cleaned up to replace the cracked one.

Then thanks to mr Derek, he linked me to a place that had restored hub caps for my 510, 75 bucks, ordered one, hoping as nice as they said it would be when i talked to them, to finally replace my damaged one since everyplace ive talked to wants over 100 bucks to repair my caps. Wil post pics when it shows up.

Few pics of last few months since shes been drivable again.

Taking her out tomorrow for her last run before rain starts again.  While shes in garage going to buff her up, and give her a full detaila gain so shes ready for show season to start back up. May try getting into the car show at convention center even for the hell of it.

Regarding the hesitaiton:

You might try replacing the fuel pump.

Your problem sounds similar to a problem I had. My 510 with stock L16 and Hitachi carb was running poorly intermittently. It would go lean and backfire through the carb. I tried everything, including testing the mechanical pump on there, which squirted fuel beautifully when you disconnected the line. I pulled the fuel tank, checked all lines, a huge pain. I put on a new/rebuilt carb. Nothing worked. I finally replaced the original fuel pump, which was a stock unit mounted on the side of the head, with a NOS 510 mechanical pump that I found new and the problem was solved. I should have done this first. I think the pump was less than $50, I think I got it on ebay. No fuel delivery problems since and I'm now running an LZ22 with DCOE's. Its very torquey, it guzzles fuel and the mechanical pump handles the job easily even at 100mph+ for sustained periods.

My carb showed up, put it on, has a few differences. Like a outlet ont he backflow valve i capped off, and a anti diesel wire for 12v power that i didnt have.  Car started right up, is idling a bit high, and studdered the first few secounds, After that she was running great, no longer running rich, carb is not leaking fuel anymore. Very happy, just pissed i cant road test due to snow. I did put her under load with e brake and foot brake on, got on her a bit to where she wanted to pull hard, and has no hesitation or issues after idling a bit, so thats a good sign.  Once weather clears up i can take her out. Now pics.

You will need the idle cut solenoid wired up if you want to turn the idle down near normal. Just connect to the electric choke for a power supply. OR remove the idle cut solenoid and remove the spring and needle inside, and replace.

Art is finally home after 4 days at Dan Harts. He said the way they rebuilt the carb was as if it needed to go through emissions, way to small of jets and stuff. Also the Accelerator pump plunger was 2 times its normal size due to ethanol fuel, which is annoying that its what caused most of my issues.  So shes running great now, he also rebuilt my dizzy, she drove great home, was so happy to have her back to normal.

Now to get detailed up and ready for the Roadster show.

After buying this can im getting some amazing good luck. most of you know ive been fighting work comp for 4 freaking years now, they have FINALLY decided to settle after mroe pressure from my lawyer, i cant say how much due to confidentiality agreement, but im getting way less than i wanted, but i figured settle and just be done so i can go back to school and learn something new.  With the money i plan on getting valves adjusted on blue, and then having the radiator bored (shes ran a lil to hot on the way to jccs) and then i plan on buying something else fun. I plan on either buying another altima se-r (i miss mine that i had, i had to sell her when i got hurt since i couldnt afford 2 car payments without a income) or maybe get a 620 again and make it look like my old 620. Told the wife i need to get myself something with the money, as kind of a victory thing for me, after all this bullshit for 4 years, when it should of ended 3 years agoa fter i had recovered from the 2nd surgery.  I also plan on putting about 1000 into purple, get front end rebuilt on her.  Just in a very good mood knowing my life can FINALLY move forward without work comp going, nope.

Since like NOTHING ever gets changed on this car, and nothing really to update until today.  Art got some new tires...well Newish.  God knows how long the current tires had been on her, and one was starting to bubble.  Was not going to do a long drive to Canada this coming weekend with a tire like that.  My dad had found these a while ago, white walls need a MAJOR cleaning (one is turning blue)  but never mounted and around 10 years old white walls that look like what was on the car.   Got them mounted for 65 bucks and balanced.  Left the hub caps off untill i get to Canada.  Especially since im going to have to bleach the crap out of some white walls this weekend :)
