tr8er
I know this must have been done a bunch of times. Would the process be the same as the modified stock 280zx with the 510 spring perch, and the stop collars? Any complications? or words of wisdumb? Anyone have pics? note: I simply have not been able to find a 280zx at a parts yard. (hawaii) Quote Link to comment
Skib
what? what you have pictured is a 280zx rear strut Quote Link to comment
Tristin
Yeah, you want 280zx front struts and they bolt right in to the car. You may have to suck it up and have them shipped from the mainland. It's going to suck because they're heavy, but if you can't find them local... Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
Rear ZX struts are too long... If low for rear use KYB AGX for AE86 or similar setup. Sedan might even need longer shock. Quote Link to comment
Tristin
If this is for the rear than use Camaro shocks. Quote Link to comment
tr8er
Ouch. eBay (from whom I shamefully snagged the photo) didn't list this one as a rear. I'm working on the front right now. So the question is basically, if it ends up costing around the same after shipping to have someone pull these off a zx and ship them, or buy an aftermarket FRONT zx strut, what are the known pros and cons to either. Thanks in advance. Quote Link to comment
Tristin
Pros and cons to new vs. used?- or 510 vs. ZX? New vs. used should be obvious. If 510 vs. ZX: -ZX will pull the wheelbase in about 3/4in on both sides allowing you to fit wider rims. -ZX brakes are larger than 510s. They were made to stop about a 900lb heavier car so they will work great on a 510. Quote Link to comment
freekwonder
If this is for the rear than use Camaro shocks. 1984 toyota celica or early 70s Buick Opel GT strut is a little shorter, and a saab 900 strut is even shorter. Quote Link to comment

Thanks in advance. Sounds like you may be confused about the entire front strut assembly. On newer cars the entire upright shock/strut unbolts from the spindle, but on 510's, 280zx's, etc the spindle & strut tube are integrated into one piece. When people swap 280zx "struts" onto 510's, this includes the spindle, hub, strut tube, brake caliper & rotor, not just the "strut" (or shock insert). Quote Link to comment
Skib
or buy an aftermarket FRONT zx strut you cant buy an aftermarket. the 280zx front swap is the entire strut tube assembly, the strut tube, spindle, hub, ect, are all one assembly. Quote Link to comment
hobbes_the_cat
I don't think anyone will have new strut assemblies, probably NLA from Nissan for years and no one makes new aftermarket strut assemblies. You will need to find used ones and put new inserts in them if you so desire. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If you find a used one you do not need the spring. You will be using the smaller diameter 510 spring or perhaps a coil over. Quote Link to comment
tr8er
Well my intention is to keep my spring and perch and duct tape it to the strut tube from whatever I find. Sound like my search is limited by old, used, and not easy to find (not impossible though.). I do see a parts car 280zx for $1K. Wonder if there is more to grab before dumping the shell (cancer rust.). They won't sell me just that. Quote Link to comment
tr8er
No worries, I use the name brand stuff. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It was the duct tape.... wasn't it? I guess RTV-ing them on would be too obvious. Quote Link to comment
tr8er
I guess that was trollish. sorry about that. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
No worries, we're pretty loose around here. Quote Link to comment

Uber Deaf One
you cant buy an aftermarket. Yes you can. https://technotoytuning.com/nissan/510/front-coilover-conversion-datsun-510-280zx-strut-casings Quote Link to comment
Skib
Yes you can. https://technotoytun...x-strut-casings no. you cant. those arnt aftermarket. those are factory strut tubes they take core on and modify for their coil set up. we do the same thing here at the shop for swap meets. tr8er
It will be a challenge to make one as pretty as that. But I'd probably end up painting them black to subdue some of that pink panty peeking out from below the skirt bling. I've enjoyed some of those textured effect rattle can paints. And powder coat finish. First I need some stockers to modify. Anyone want to send me some on a pallett? Not really joking. I will pay a fair price and throw in a case of papaya or pineapple ripe from HI. Quote Link to comment
Tristin
Stockers or already modified ones? Quote Link to comment
