The father and son roadster

Recommended Posts

Okay my name is Julio I’m from Texas. I’m 15 years old and i have always been fascinated with all types of cars. But up to now I’m starting to work together with my dad on restoring cars. So that means this is my firs son and father project. The car we are restoring is a 1970 1600 Datsun with the r16 engine and 4 speed transmission. The car has some rust but not that bad due to the age it has. Up to now i have only seen 4 holes on the whole car and the biggest one is smaller than a penny. But i will have to change the floor panels because they have gotten rusty and weak and that is not so much of a big deal. The only parts I think I need from my point of view up to now will have to be the carbs and the carb manifold to have it running and the fuel pump. As none of them came with the car when purchased. Other than that i will have to do the normal like changing the interior carpet and seats re upholstering. My future plans for this car is to get it painted under and all around including the chassis. But that will be done by a car painter. Also the wiring will be changed and the grill will have to be homemade because i haven't found one. The engine has been renewed so that a + for me also the brakes and al the master from the clutch and brakes. Also the suspension was replaced with new ones. The car was bought for $830 us dollars and it think it was a good deal for all the new goodies it has. If you could please help me out how to post pictures here i will post some.

See "Parts for sale" section. Tana "Vindats 1" is selling the carbs, filter housing and above all the filter. Just posted so hop to it!

Welcome to the forum! That looks like a really solid Roadster. Be sure to remove ALL of the "tar paper insulation" on top of the floors, as there is always more rust under there. I just used dry ice for the first time to do that, and it worked great! Go buy a big chunk of dry ice, break it up in pieces, and spread it all over the floor boards. It flash freezes the tar paper, making it brittle, then just tap it with a hammer and/or use a chisel to pry it up, and it just just "pops" right off! The leftover ice will just eventually evaporate, and disappear.

WARNING!! DRY ICE IS VERY DANGEROUS IF NOT HANDLED PROPERLY, SO GET YOUR DAD INVOLVED!! It will burn your skin badly if handled without gloves etc etc.

Good luck with the project!

The floor did have a huge hole. Sadly the floor was non repairable. Because one of the previous owner decided to cut it wrong. So we just preferred to change the floor with new metal and paint it the same color as the exterior. That’s why I removed the brake lines and brake and clutch masters. So I could lift the body from the frame and paint them both from underneath. The frame is going to get painted with the paint used like on the bed liner of the pick up trucks. Also the body will be painted from underneath with the same paint. Tomorrow I will be going and help the painter remove the dash board and the gauges. Mainly because I want to clean them up from the inside and outside cause they are dirty. Anyone knows if the Miata seats look good in the car or do you all prefer some Procar seats. This one’s ----> http://www.amazon.com/ProCar-Scat-80-1605-61R-SPORTSMAN-Velour/dp/B002L1IMIS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1343882039&sr=8-5&keywords=racing+seats+procar)

By the way the car is going to get painted tarnish silver gray like the 2008 corvette. Also I will be buying some Rota RB wheels like these ones. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROTA-WHEEL-RB-15X8-4X114-3-12-RS-DATSUN-ROADSTER-/300737660837?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item46055c87a5&vxp=mtr

Thou of course everything at its time we are not rich. Sadly my dad will probably be leaving to work to Colombia for some time we still don’t know. He could be there for 1 week up to even 1 year and I hope that doesn’t happen. But I will still be working on the car but I won’t finish it till he comes back so he can be the first one to start it and add the finishing touches.
