Worked on the brakes today. The front were squeaking for no reason, gave em a quick clean anyway. The rear was an ordeal. Passenger side the drum needed some hammering and bolts to get off, pads were cracked and glazed completely so it got new ones. Nice and grippy now. The drivers side drum wouldnt come off with hammering, went to try the bolt trick and someone had broken off some bolts flush into the holes. Fast forward three hours and two broken easy outs, drum still isnt off and I gave up so we put it back on so I could get to school. Next idea is to heat it up and then hammer to try and break it loose. Also buy a new drum >.>.

I have a 78 510 also. But mines the sedan version. For my car, I put in seats from a 92 Ford Escort GT. They are super comfy and look pretty awesome. Plus they can use you original seat rails with just minimal modification. Got mine from a local junkyard for $30. Heres a pic of the seats. (Not mine, but very close. Mine have a red edging, not blue) If you like I can get some pics of my actual car with the seats, so you can get a better idea what they look like the car.

Thanks for the tip! I'll go by after class tomorrow and see what condition the ones at pick n pull are in. If not, I MIGHT be able to get some generic ebay seats for a fairly decent price

BAM, SEATS

000_0005.jpg

no idea why the passenger side is so dirty, this is AFTER went to town with the tuff stuff. might have to rent a carpet cleaner, doesnt smell thankfully

000_0006.jpg

betcha cant guess what they're from :D

And now for the measurements. The original seat measurements are:

The new ones are:

I believe in the business they would call that "close enough". I already started working on the passenger seat and am almost done. Pictures to come soon.

And the seats are in! Comfort is wonderful.

On the bottom of the escort seats i found these little locator holes under the bolt holes. They were conveniently sized, but over a little too far.

I was going to drill a hole next to it, but then it dawned on me to make slots for a large amount of adjustment

I broke out the dremel and many of these later

Success! I did it on all four corners and it worked great. Being able to adjust it made it a perfect fit.

The passenger side is a little tilted towards the door, but I figured out how to fix it on the drivers side. The driver side is about an inch off center from the steering wheel, which is kinda annoying. I'll take it back out sometime and see if I can make the slots a little wider to remedy it a little.

But overall I'm extremely happy, its like driving a whole new car. Not having the seat flex when I push in the clutch and brakes makes it feel so much better.

That's what I was thinking. A unfinished rag top job.

I had a vw 64 square back with a nice rag top and I loved it.

The rag top that was recommended earlier in the thread MUST happen at some point. The novelty of having an entire open roof is just too cool to pass up.

It looked like this and was my highschool daily driver I built with my dad.

And the ragtop was the shit, mine was primer red for a really long time then got a gloss comp orange.

It's still my top 3 cars I ever owned, and I sold it for my first 280z hahaha

But ragtops are the coolest, specially if you have a rack that compliments the open top area too, and that also helps to ensure you don't lose any storage space.

Yeah but i had my rag top in Arizona where it never rained, if you live in the northwest or north east rain areas it has to be done perfectly or it will leak and cause more problems than enjoyment

Greengoon said his doesnt leak in the rain, so if I do it right hopefully it wont :D. But thats a long time from now.

My alternator developed the bearing death rattle, and I decided to just replace the whole thing instead of rebuild it. I expected to have to order one through an auto store, but Oreilly's got me one in less than two hours! Such helpful people there.

It looked a little bigger around

But a quick check of the back of it proves its perfectly okay! Its in and running worry free so far, I'll see how it works over the rest of the week.

I've also been looking at new mirrors, because mine are disgusting and look like shit. These are some GM copy, but I like how they look.

While changing the oil today I noticed the seal on what I think is the oil pump has blown out the side and is a gummy oily mess. Hopefully just the seal is bad, but I might change the pump anyway while its out. Also the front brake calipers on this win the prize for weirdest design

So the car has decided not to run reliably anymore, but in a very interesting way. On tuesday I was driving to class (the first day of the new semester, just my luck) and everything was going fine, but maybe ten minutes into the drive i went to pull away from a light and nothing happened when i hit the pedal. It just idled lower and lower until it died. After pushing it through the intersection I gave it another try and it started, revved twice, and then the same thing. My best guess is the fuel system? The only problem is that I know zero about carbs. I guess just start at the fuel pump and work my way through the system? Any ideas will be a big help

Does it die because you give it gas? I would try the double pump... It's what I have to do. From a dead stop I give it a quick throttle tap, let go, then give it gas. If I just give it gas right away, it bogs down and stalls out.

I've checked for vacuum leaks, a faulty accelerator pump, proper idle/fuel settings and nothing has fixed it. I'm thinking about a rebuild but the PO mentioned he had already performed one.

*Check fuel filters ... Change as needed ... Use GOOD gas from Chevron.

* If filters have a lot of rust/sediment ... You will need to change your fuel filters often regardlss ... Either long duration of neglect in changing the filters has occured or a dirty fuel tanks that needs to be boiled/sealed by a radiator shop.

* If you have one .. check your anti-dieseling solenoid on your carb and make sure its receiving voltage/good connections.

* electric or mechanical fuel pump ? Regardless of either .. perform a fuel volume test.

* if mechanical pump make sure it is no leaking/puking gas out into your oil pan (pull dipstick and see if oil is satuarted in gas/thin.)

*make sure carb base bolts are snug .. I assume about 5-8 ish ft lbs ? No more !!

* check for vacuum leaks !! Grab a can of carb clean or whatever ... Fire extinguishr or water readily available ... Turn on car .. lightly spray intake manifold sealing area/carb sealing area/vacuum hoses.

*check fuel level in fuel sight bowl (if applicable) Hitachi. Weber dgvs have to have the top cover pulled in order to set/see float pre-determned height.

*If no fuel in fuel sight bowl ... You have a fuel delivery problem.

*as mentioned carefulley adjust idle circuit (if needed)

*make sure your main jets are no clog with debris. Take out clean and inspect as necessary. A clogged jet will cause a lot of problems BUT is an easy fix.

*when opening up/rebuilding a carb ... Use very light torque on the screws/bolts ... Very light ... Over tightening is much worse than loose.

*look down the carb .... Quickly open the throttle all the way up and close the throttle ... There shoud be a distinctive *squirt* of fuel .. if not your accelerator pump circuit is clogged/needs overhaul... Having a bad accelerater pump or a shot one ... Makes the car unbearable to drive.

*Test/check your power valve.

Double pump off the line is no Bueno ..

What kind of carb ? I believe weber sells larger accelerator discharge nozzles if need be.

---I would double check po carb rebuild work. People tend to *crank* down on carburetor screws/bolts causing tiny leaks in which = gives grief.

--- Carefully check/reset your idle circuit.

--- vacuum leaks are likely but you said you checked those.

--- I'm not sure of running rich or not but test/check your power valve as well ( if weber)

Gotta be honest .. I'm leaning towards accelerator pump again lol .

Have you checked the guts of your distributor to see if it is advancing correctly ?

---I had a distributor that was seized inside (would not advance period) gave me grief ...

Thanks for the tips guys! Friday is my least busy day, so I'll do some work and take pictures of anything Im curious about. Also could the electric choke be fucking up and flooding it? Are there multiple fuel filters? the only one I could find while poking around was on the passenger firewall. I assume the car doesnt need to be running to check the fuel squirt down the top of the carb
