MicroMachinery
Turbo charging is an expensive, but doable option; there were turbo'ed versions of this engine in other countries. I know that in alot of diesels, you can put in larger injectors for more fuel, but good luck finding even a set of stock injectors.. gonna have to get creative. Another option would be to gear your rear diff lower(higher numerically). It wouldn't give you more power, per se, but it would increase the torque that you're putting to the ground. Oh yes, and.. wayno
Burnout contest you say, with a SD22 diesel engine, you looking for the "Overly optimistic" award? Your best bet would be to disconnect the rear brakes, put a spray bar over the rear wheels, and spray bleach onto the tires as you start the contest and ride the brakes, btw you should disconnect the brake lights so they don't know your riding the brakes.    These engines are only 61hp. BTW, don't run out of bleach. Welcome to Ratsun Would like to see your hotrod datsun 720 diesel, post up some photos please.:D 2 Quote Link to comment

wayno
I own a couple nissan 720 diesel engines ratsun720, one is in my 80 datsun 720 dually, the other is in my lighter 69 datsun 521 kingcab i made, i never really thought of them as hotrods, sure I can get the 521 to chirp the rears going around a corner or in the rain, but that is about it, and the 521 has a lot more get up and go than the 720 as it is much lighter. Here is mine, what does yours look like? Quote Link to comment
ratsun720
I must be lucky, ive got 62 HP :) In the competition were not allowed to use any liquids to help assist. Its all down to the 'brute' HP weve tested the old girl out a couple times now and we were plesently suprised. Thought it was in first gear, but really it was in seccond (due to it being a column shift, and me not being used to it). It did really well. made some decent smoke (and thats not from the exhaust) lol, will be good to see how she goes on the day. Ill put some pics up in the next couple days, just finishing off the fuel cell and rear guards... cheers damo 1 Quote Link to comment

Where does you throddle cable connect to on the engine? Directly to the injection pump? Or does it look like this engine where it connects to a carbarator looking setup? Quote Link to comment

I made this truck, I extended the frame so I could put a kingcab/longbox together, and then I found some dually fenders and had some adapters made for the dually rims, as I couldn't use the gearing in the actual dually rear end itself, it's a fun truck, but I can't really haul weight in the truck. wayno Quote Link to comment
elmerfudpucker
NICE!!! I like the truck, now where did the bed go? And on a side note: WTF are you peckerheads Neg reppin him for? Give that to Kami, he wants it. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Diesel column shift???? Where are you? Oz??? I don't doubt it will torque the tires. The 720 only came with a wide ratio 5 speed here (very low 1st gear) and a 4.375 differential. Without the bed.... no problems. Try frying the tires till they are well melted and hammer into 3rd gear to get them really spinning. Quote Link to comment
ratsun720
Yeah were from South Australia, Moonta. AKA - shitsville.. Yeah its a column shift, would love to know what gearbox i could use to turn it into a floor shift.... Tried it out today without the tray, it really gets going now. I tried to put it into 3rd half way through a burnout and jammed the gear linkages... so its seccond gear burnouts only!! Got one rear guard done today, making them out of a 44 gallon drum.. Tail lights to go on next, numberplate and then registration, looking forward to taking it for a cruise around town :) Ill post some pics in a few days once its finished. cheers Damo Quote Link to comment

You will need an FS5W71B (if you got them in any cars there like the 280zx?) and the front case from a N Am diesel. SD25 front case half. (starter on pass side in Oz) Donner 5 speeds will look like this and here are mostly 31.5" long but some 720 5 speeds are 26". . No sense quick shifting the column. If you get the tires really hot and melting you should be able to stop in the puddle, put in third and sudden shock it loose and go 'up in smoke.' Quote Link to comment

Thats the cleanest SD22 motor ive ever seen in my life!! :D It's a fresh rebuild, it went into the truck last weekend, it's been sitting in the diningroom for over a year, stayed clean that way. It's hard to turbocharge inline injection pumps like whats on this engine, it can be done, but I don't know of any long term success storys at this time. I know of one that was running in the past year, but they couldn't get any significant boost out of the turbo, was probably to big of a turbo. Since you are in austrailia, you have access to the VE type injection pumps, they are easy to turbocharge, I actually imported an engine(diesel) from austrailia last year with a VE type on it, but have not got around to that project. That truck looks HOT, but it looks to have a, ahh........ firm ride. Quote Link to comment
ratsun720
Took the datsun ute to the Port Pirie burn out competition on the weekend! Had a ball! Here's a few pics of the ol' girl in action. I was the last 4cyl alive! Overall performance was pretty good, no problems at all, except lack of power........... So were going to go find the biggest rustiest turbo we can and see how it runs with abit of added pressure!!!! :D Cheers, Damo & Gem 1 Quote Link to comment
