Hello all, been reading these boards for awhile never decided to register until recently as I'm ready to purchase this 70 510 2dr.

I will be the 3rd owner of this 510, it's 2nd owner has had it for a long time, since high school. Been garaged and sitting since the early 90's. He started it every day until he stopped in the early 00's. Engine is a built L20B (cam, pistons, headwork) mated to a 280ZX 5-Speed. The cars trim was all replaced in the 80;s, still tight, and brand new. Car is water tight. All the chrome has no dings, it's very straight for the year, which is attracting me most.

It is lowered with Datsun Comp-R suspension, Mulholland Sway Bars front/rear. It has 15" Enkei's and custom flares which were done in the 80's. It was a steel tube that was rolled into the fender well, car had 0 rust at the time, and it is still that way. The whole car is actually out of an 80's time capsule, from the Recaro seats to the Clarion cassette player, seriously.

On to the pictures.

You can get a good idea of the rear flares here and the Enkei's. Also the taillights being a different model.

Driver side shot of the car, very straight body, all parts are original and line up.

Wheels on the car, all are straight, all tires are flat :/

Front end picture, everything is there and working.

Interior shot.

There's that old Clarion Cassette, all electronics are in working condition as well as knobs, heater, etc.

Rear interior is intact and complete, needs some cleaning.

Front seats are Recaros from the 80s of course.

The internals of the head and block have been built by some shop, so what are the chances of this thing firing up? I'm going to go through all the fluids of course.

My question is, should I purchase this car? Does it look like a "serious" project, I don't think so. I've been through some serious builds and this car seems VERY intact for its year.

maybe drain the gas. see if it PUMPS gas.

Run 2 fuel filters incase lots of rust.

ck valve lash but no reason to ck it yet unless it dont start.

Borrow a battery and see if you have SPARK. if yes Im thinking it could be running in a few hour if not less.

this car is intake and not hacked up(wiring) I would just drive this car the way it is.

I would always try to pay less to get a510 cause I already have 2.How much is the owner hurting?

Just depends who wants it. Its worth 2500 already if no rust.No kids have hacked up the wiring either

Hope the SU carbs are not junk!

Buy it! Only reason for it not to fire would be bad gas (old), or carbs are too far out of adjustment (well and dead battery).

Where is the valve case breather hose going? Just down and out of the way?

Thank you gentlemen for the feedback. I appreciate it.

Yes, the current owner is an older guy now and has just kept it in the garage non-op, he's had it since highschool so I know the history.

Banzai510(hainze) : You're making my heart feel good with your words, haha. I was going to drain all the gas, oil, coolant fluids and replace respectively. As far as the filters, I didn't think of that, thank you. Is it highly probable that there is rust INSIDE the gas tank? Is this a common occurence? I'm banking on no, but incase I will run two filters.

I'm pretty sure there's going to be spark, was running fine before he left it in the garage, but that was about a decade ago  I will check the valve lash if it does turn. I was thinking of taking off the valve cover and lubing the cam journals as well, then manually turning the crank a couple of times?

Yea true, but since you're saying it's worth $2500 I don't want to haggle the guy really. I don't think he really knows what a gem apparently he has. I'll be going there tomorrow (Thursday) will get more pictures once it's out in the open. His garage is tight, he had a really nice 240Z next to it, he was selling that too. It had some old school Wed Sport wheels, which I'm thinking of buying. He's got a few sets of collectables, I'm getting this too. He's throwing it in, said it was the real deal BRE spoiler or something to this extent. He took it off because it didn't fit when he flared out the fenders, I'm going to try to modify the spoiler to fit.

Fixer, MicroMachinery, Eagle Adam, Refresh, RO510 : Yea, I think so too. Heading out there tomorrow with the truck.

Laecaon : Great news, thanks for chiming in. That hose is just dumping out towards the bottom of the engine bay. Would it be more effective if I hooked it up to some type of vacuum?

Skunk: Yea they are, already sitting on 15's. He has Datsun CompR struts on their too, so he said they're already pretty much shortened. He has a few sets of wheels too, I'm thinking of "acquiring" a few extra sets, maybe I'll throw em up for sale after I clean them. My avatar is one of the wheels, it's a cover for them.

I have had good fuel pumps taken off running cars go bad after sitting too long.

510 gas tanks are pretty clean as its not in the enviorment like the trucks,521 gas Tanks in wheelwell has lots of rust/dirt.

Also SU carbs dont have a acell pump so you can pump it all you want it aint shooting gas in there.

clean batter ends so its ground good. try starting.

But I would offer less as what happens if motor is bad. But rust free cars are getting harder to find it up to you.

But if running I woud just drive it. No SR swaps or whatever. If you want one of those there a ton on the Dime Quarterly website in the projects for Sale section.

Hainz: Yea man, I'm partial to the L-series anyway. I think it's going to be fine, thanks for that link earlier for the L20b, it's a fantastic resource. The valve adjustment walk through is extremely helpful and I watched your Headgastket replacement videos as well. I'm just sucking in all the knowledge. I've built 240SX's in the past. Here was my last build......

It was a 1989 Sileighty w/ SR20DET Blacktop. GT2871R, built by yours truely.

So I'm pretty familiar with the SR20DET, I've built this engine myself.

As soon as I get a chance to get down there, should be today (Sunday).

I'm planning on meeting up with the owner, if not today, sometime this early week but very soon.

Thanks for all the ideas, I really hope that L20b fires up...it should even with what the owner is saying.
