Take off your valve cover and look on the bell to see if the chain is eating away at it. Then look down in the cavity and see if your tensioner is still tensioning or if it's loose.

Like HRH said,

Look down front cover and see if anything obvious.

also If a long bolt was used in the lower stat housing and cause a wear mark.

a broken slack side guide upper or lower bolt? meaning only one bolt is hold the slack side guide.

PS ck the alternator housing to make sure the noise isnt comming from there making it look like a front cover/timming chain proplem. Loose water pump bolt. the long one!

my l20b has a half wine/half whistle that seems to match the rpm's. it kinda reminds me of the sound a blowers belt drive makes, which seems kinda cool except that i know i don't have a blower,so the sound must be a bad thing. i think it started when i replaced the alternator, but i'm not sure because there are so many other noises due to the l16 exhaust hitting the bell housing, and sometimes the body itself. that and the trans. has worn gears,and/or bad syncros (it pops out of 2nd,& is stiff going into 1st ,2nd,& sometimes reverse.) i know i'm in for a trans. swap as soon as i can find one. i need a Z 5 speed,or at least a non-dogleg 5 speed. anyway,i'd like to track down the cause of this whining sound before some real damage . any ideas? something related to the alternator/belt maybe? thanks- Loren

Did yu cahnge anything late on this. Sometime people put to ;ong of a bolt in the lower stat housing and it pushes on the chain tensioner. If thsi hasent been removed then this isnt it.

I think the tensioner is out far enought where is cocked and wearing on the metal. or maybe something on the slack side timming chain guide. Have to open valve cover and look down.

It can be many things i had the same issue(for a day) thought it was the tensioner but it appeared that i was running on low oil, filled it up and on i went haven't had a problem but check my oil constantly. Do what HRH said too.
