five1oh
PURISTS LOOK AWAY NOW!!! Cutting the surf line for flares. I DO NOT care if you think I should have kept them............................MY dream car had flares on it so it will be flared. It WILL wear all the GTR badges too! I call it a tribute you can call it a fake, clone, copy, or whatever you like but I call it a tribute car. I DO have the GT-kai badges as well but will likely run the GT-R badges. Every time I drive it I will make sure everyone knows it is NOT the real deal and I am NOT trying to pass it off as real. Now that that's out of the way LOL on to the pics! five1oh
So now that the firewall forward metal work was mostly done it was time to turn attention to the worst of the worst......passenger (left) side rocker, door support, etc. etc. Before that could be done Eric built a square tube frame and welded it in place to keep the car square and rigid as a LOT of the support metal would be cut out and replaced. I cannot explain how difficult it was to make the repairs and how long it took......Eric was meticulous recording how the metal overlapped and made sure to put it back to factory. In some areas there were 3 to 4 layers of metal panels overlapping to create structure. I believe this section took 2-3 months to complete but Eric NAILED IT. The lower pinch weld is straight as an arrow front to back and Eric was meticulous to make sure the spot welds were created in the factory locations and left ALL factory seams rather than cutting corners and welding and grinding smooth. On to the PICS!!! He started with the front portion by the passenger kick panel. SO THANKFUL I found that donor panel.... You better be taking care of that wife for how rad she's being about this thing. ALL of them lol......I have yet to see a clean one without the hidden mess....obviously there are cars stateside in better shape that are driving around but I guarantee you take a DA to the rocker panel and you will start to see similar. The problem is in Japan cars must be inspected to stay on the road every year and if they see rust it has to be repaired. Sadly the majority of repairs cover up spots to pass inspection instead of being repaired properly. In addition if you saw the prices for replacement panels you'd cry.......for instance the tail panel goes for $3500 right now..... you will see my solution to that in a later post in a few days...heck that lower rear panel I pictured set me back $800 and that was a deal. Mind you it did NOT include shipping or commission fees..... 2 Quote Link to comment
gmkeegan
question for you? the section that connects to the lower door hinge where you had to cut out.. is that skyline specific or what was it taken from another model?. thanks Quote Link to comment

I imported a skyline piece for replacement. I haven't found much of anything that works from other cars.... five1oh
So after Eric got the passenger side rocker pretty complete he kept working his way back to the trunk area and boy was it a MESS. The tail panel was not salvagable as it was rusted through all the way around the tail lights and where it met the trunk floor there was a bunch of fiberglass and filler. The only way to repair was to cut it out and replace with all new metal. For months I was searching for a tail panel and as you saw when one would come up for sale it was too much for me to spend ($3500). My good friend (who just joined Ratsun lol - kgc10) had one hanging in his garage and I worked on him for months and months but he wouldn't budge. I could tell the rear of his car was in much better shape than mine but try and try he wouldn't sell it to me........boo (although if I were in HIS shoes I wouldn't let it go either....) So I ended up scoring a used one on YAJ for $1200 (OUCH!). Eric was able to save it as the rust wasn't too bad but it needed tons of shaping work. On to the wonderful pics....
