spook420
years ago i bought a water pump for a L16 1970 510 goon I had and unfortunately I sold the wagon and forgot to give the guy the water pump I had spare. Fast forward to this past week where I had listed to pump on ebay and someone bought it. Now the buyer is messaging me saying that it doesnt fit his L18 engine and wants to return it to me for a full refund. Fair is fair and if that is the case I will accept the return. Ive been away from the community for a bit and IIRC it should bolt right up to the L18 engine. Did I have an odd size water pump or is something else at play here. I want to make the right choice here and asking advise if what he is saying is true. Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Do you have a pic of what you had...? I have an l16 and it was my understanding the front l16 and l18 timing cover were the same so the water pump should be the same.... What doesn't fit? 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I think if I am right I actually had to drill the locating pin hole bigger on the water pump.... that could be his issue... Quote Link to comment

What doesn't fit? not sure if you can view the listing but here EDIT: his message - "I bought a water pump from you and it does not fit the L18 engine. I would like to return it and get my money back." Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Well this is the gasket for my l16.... I don't think that's an l series water pump you sold... Quote Link to comment
spook420
Well this is the gasket for my l16.... I don't think that's an l series water pump you sold... the bigger picture is that I was sold a non-L series water pump. Got it from either Napa or Autozone locally. Should have know not to goto them. Maybe its for a Z engine?! WOW this puts me in a strange postion. I had a pic of the old water pump off when I was cleaning up the motor at some point. I think it was before I bought this water pump I sold so I never was able to test fit it. Quote Link to comment
wayno
Well that sucks for you, as it doesn't look like an L series water pump to me, but it should not have looked like one to the buyer also, as the gasket is there and you showed both sides of the water pump. But in the end it doesn't appear to be as advertised, and that is what counts. 1 Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
My insomnia figured something out.... This gasket matches what I saw in your pic and eBay ad.... Plus found this... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
On closer look not an L series. I have an old after market one with the thin casting and stamped impeller. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Crash called it. KA pump. Not L. 1 Quote Link to comment
Ratwagon1600
What all the other guys have said, and, despite the fact there were differnet impeller sizes IIRC between 240 series and 510, 610 etc series, if its an L motor, (4 or 6) the water pump will bolt on. Clearly, not an L16 pump. What RW finds bemusing about this is someone is busting your balls over a $20 (murican dollars) + part. First world problem IMLTHO. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
^ That. Buyer should have seen the difference prior to purchase. And when an L water pump can be had for less than $10 on Rock Auto...um, yeah. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Stock L series water pump used on everything L Z series water pump (the same) but with deeper cavity and taller impeller. These may have been used on L series equipped with air con... maybe. I've only seen this type on clutch fan Z series engines like the 720. Quote Link to comment
racerx
so curiosity sits in..will this work on L16-L120? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I had L pumps that had different fan holes spacing different. Think was from a Z car. also fanclutch set up. had to guess from here what the 2nd buyer is hinting at dont fit. otherwise all L series non fan clutch should fit the stock 510 fan and bolt to a L series front cover Quote Link to comment
spook420
I think I solved why I bought this water pump. Yes it for a KA motor. I bought a 1998 Nissan Frontier shortly after getting my Goon and remember buying it for the truck and not the Goon. This was way back in 2012 so my memory has been a bit hazey. Thank you all for the help and knowledge on solving the issue. Ive talked to the buyer and going through working this out with them. Quote Link to comment
wayno
Is it even worth having him send it back, I likely would just send his money back to him and tell him to keep it, that way it was out of my life. 1 Quote Link to comment

Honestly I was considering it once I found out that it didnt fit. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If you posted it for sale as being for an L series engine, well that's on you I'm afraid even though an honest mistake. Not worth paying for the shipping back whoever pays it, again should be you I think. Just refund and walk away. Quote Link to comment
