datzenmike Posted January 19, 2018 Report Share Posted January 19, 2018 What you should do is put a 620 body and box onto a 720 4X4 frame. Now it seems way easier. The 720 is IFS and would be a nightmare to graft into a 620. Then the transfer case. Swap the body, much easier. If you have a long wheelbase you'll need a long wheelbase 720 4x4, If regular wheelbase a short 720. 3 Quote Link to comment

Charlie69 Posted January 19, 2018 Report Share Posted January 19, 2018 I did a frame swap on my 66 520. I put a 1980 720 chassis under it with a 1976 L20B automatic trans. When I was at AZ DMV doing a abonded title level 2 inspection on my 85 720 ST I asked them what I needed to do on my 66 520. I was told by the inspection officer to bring it down for a level 2 inspection and they will reissue the 66 title with the current frame and engine numbers. When I get in drivable I will take it in and have this done, that way if I am out of state and get pulled over (mainly in CA & TX) they cannot impound my truck for non matching numbers. Cost is the problem ,they are like 2700 at this time S13det.Would have to sell 86 Toyo 4x4 x cab shop truck for a standard cab short bed Sleeper. 1 Quote Link to comment

Most time these frame swaps are never completed. Next week a 4x4 620 will show up for sale for 500 only needing a head gasket( guy i met @ gas station got his 620 this way) 1 Quote Link to comment

Banzai is right, most jobs of this magnitude are never finished, and usually if they are finished, they look like crap or are scary to drive. As a fabrication guy myself, nothing bothers me more than seeing someone start a large project that I know will never get finished. We should have an obituary section on this forum, for projects that died before they were finished. But, I will say, if you're capable of doing the work and motivated enough to finish a large project like a body swap...go for it. 2 Quote Link to comment

But i was hoping that maybe the 620 and 720 were highly compatible... but its makes sense it wouldn't be something easy also if i planned on a 620 why would i buy a Comanche, it looks very different. Stoffregen Motorsports Posted January 24, 2018 Report Share Posted January 24, 2018 I think he was saying don't do all that work to get 4 wheel drive, just go buy a Comanche and be done. I like the idea of a swap better, as long as it will actually get done. One difference between the two trucks is the steering column. The 620 uses a solid column that bolts to the steering box. The 720 uses a firewall mounted column and a separate shaft to the box. I like the thought of having a separate, exposed shaft, as it makes column or box removal easier and it also makes more room in the engine bay. If you're going to do the swap, it will be best to start with a complete truck as a donor. It's always cheaper in the long run. 1 Quote Link to comment
