sergio620
Hey so I discovered I have a snapped alternator belt. However, previous owner swapped the stock alternator to a S10 alternator. So question is what size alternator belt should I get? I bought a stock 620 one and I was having trouble Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
If your lucky someone will chime in with exact size.... i assume it's a v belt .. I can't say exactly what size but the parts store should be able to give you the next size up... the part numbers are basicly the diameter and they have them stored small to big.... I had to do that and go back a couple times with my 521... seems the replacement alternator they give out at autozone has a bigger pulley and the stock belt does not fit... I don't think the part number I used will help you but when I get home I can post what I used for comparison might get you closer to getting one back on.... Quote Link to comment
sebpv
s10 alternators do NOT have V belts. I had an s10(GMC Sonoma same thing...) and the alternator had a grooved belt. If what the PO said is true, then the pulley was swapped. If I were you, I would get a clothing measuring tape(the flexible kind) and wrap around the pulleys. This isnt a common setup so you could get various answers. I also imagine the stock alternator bracket has been modified? Perhaps you could take a wild guess and adjust the alternator accordingly. Draker
Just measure it with string and go find a belt that size. 1 Quote Link to comment
Lockleaf
Add 2 inches to the string length if you go that route. Belts sit much higher than the bottom of the pulleys. And Seb- 80s s10 use v pulleys. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
He means the Datsun S-10 200sx, '77-'79 alternator 50 or optional 60 amp. '77 was external and '78 and '79 were internally regulated. I've run one of these physically larger alternators on my old 620. The alternator swings so far over to tension it that it hits the top of the idler arm. A shorter belt wouldn't slip on over the pulley so I put the belt on first and then put the bottom mounting bolts in. This will work but eventually the belt stretches and you hit the idler arm again. Take the snapped belt in they can measure it for length. Try it and if too slack, shorten it half an inch at a time. You may have to do like I did and put it on first before bolting the alternator in. Quote Link to comment
