Datsundude123
Hey guys! This is my first post on here so just want to say hi!! I'm getting a new electronic distributor tomorrow and I was wondering if I can use the old rotor from my none electronic distributor on the electronic distributor I'm sure I can I just want to make sure. Thanks. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I believe the '75 and up L20B distributor rotors and caps were all the same. They are slightly wider than the L16/18 ones. 2 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Which electronic distributor are you getting? Points-converted? Or a real EI? 2 Quote Link to comment
distributorguy
The rotor fits a little loose on some of the aftermarket distributors. If you apply a dab of RTV silicon sealant inside of it, it won't disrupt your timing by vibrating. If its new, its one of those awful Chinese replacement distributors, and likely comes with cap & rotor. 1 Quote Link to comment
Datsundude123
Which electronic distributor are you getting? Points-converted? Or a real EI? Not exactly sure what kind it is but it is from O'Reillys and I think it's just the points converted. 1 Quote Link to comment

flatcat19
Points-converted, you'll need the cap and rotor to that dizzy. Get a real matchbox and be done with it. 79 or 80 L20B Datsun, any model. 2 Quote Link to comment

distributorguy
Personally, in my testing (I rebuild distributors by trade) points will produce the best overall driving experience. More hp and torque than any electronic system, until you go distributorless with a crank-fired system. That does not apply to the Datsun dual-point setup. 3 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Those are points distributors. 1 Quote Link to comment
distributorguy
They are also not new. Cardone packs them with grease after a quick cleaning, never replaces bushings, rarely replaces springs. It won't run any better than what you had previously. By the way, Mallory is out of business. They got bought out by MSD, then the company was extinguished. Holley took over MSD with hopes of resurrecting the product line, but it'll take a while, if it ever happens. In the mean time, customer support sucks and the available product line is dwindling. 1 Quote Link to comment
Datsundude123
Those are points distributors. Whoops!! I'll post a picture of the distributor when I get it! Thanks. 1 Quote Link to comment

I'll go and get the right rotor for the distributor today. 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Take pics of the internals. I'm curious as to why you're replacing your points dizzy with an over-priced points dizzy. Lateral move. Can it be taken back so you can purchase a correct EI set-up? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If this Mallory is electronic it's likely just points free. So I suppose this would be a move up as you never have to fiddle with those damned things again. No filing, adjusting or replacing them and the dwell and timing will stay where you put it. But does it have better output? My guess is no as you will be using your old coil. Nissan made a high energy EI set up that is pointless and has an upgraded coil that can handle the current for a hotter spark. They can be found anywhere for free to $100. Set... and forget. 1 Quote Link to comment
distributorguy
Mike, no one here has a Mallory. That was just a random post thrown into the mix. He may be getting a matchbox distributor. We don't even know. 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
He posted a pic of Mallory distributors saying that is what he got. EDIT:The implication I received was that he purchased a Mallory dizzy. The O'Reillys stores around here are trying really hard to pretend that they're a hot rod shop. I'd sell you a piece of junk with a fancy sticker too if you didn't know what you were doing. 1 Quote Link to comment

distributorguy
Mallory distributors come complete with cap and rotor. Many times they come without the drive sleeve on the shaft and the shaft is not drilled. If that is the case, shim washers are also not included. Quote Link to comment
Datsundude123
Yay or nayyyy I know absolutely nothing about distributors so I don't know what's good and what isn't 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If replacing, consider an electronic distributor. No points to buy or mess with, no adjusting or filing ever. The EI distributor has higher output when used with an EI coil. $120 for a points coil is just going sideways. The EI was available on the '79 620, '80 720, '79 A10 (200sx) and '79 A10 (HL510) Don't forget you need the matching coil for this to work effectively. 2 Quote Link to comment
Datsundude123
If I didnt have the vacuum advanced hooked up from my carb to my distributor would it still make the spark plugs spark? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The distributor will still function. The vacuum advance just optimizes spark timing in relation to part throttle engine load. 2 Quote Link to comment
