oceanbeach510
So I just got my head back from the machine shop and the cam towers where removed, ive searched all all across the internet and i cant seem to find a definitive answer on what the torque settings should be at? Thanks in advance! Quote Link to comment
oceanbeach510
Oh and of course pics! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It's very little as they are very easy to strip the soft aluminum threads in the head. I can't find it either but the thrust plate just behind the cam sprocket that holds the cam in position are similar bolts and they are into aluminum. Their tightening torque is 4-6 ft. lbs. This seems about right. Quote Link to comment
oceanbeach510
Yea i figured it couldn't be to much sense the head bolts go through them also but thanks for a reassurance! Quote Link to comment
edekalil
If you had the head surfaced you may need to get the shim set that lifts the towers up the amount that was removed or very close to it. I have a set to use on a head I had done for an L20B that one day I will get put together. As for the torque setting I myself would like to know. Quote Link to comment

It's held on the the two rocker shaft mounting bolts. 1 Quote Link to comment

Yeah your right, i was not paying attention, I got this right outta The rule of greasy thumbs handbook for Datsun engines: Tighten bolt till you feel it loosen again,,, then back off 1/4 turn. 2 Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
Pretty sure 12 is correct... They are bigger bolts than the plate that holds the cam in. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Don't nobody have no repair manual? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Pretty sure 12 is correct... They are bigger bolts than the plate that holds the cam in. Could be. They mostly locate the towers and the head bolt secures them. I just know they strip easily so if a range is used use the lowest torque. Quote Link to comment

Thanks in advance! So i was just double check eveything and i noticed the number 1 cylinder is on compression stroke and the cams are at 7 and 10 not 10 and 2 anyone have some insight? The engine itself can only be at TDC. The valve timing position is what determines if #1 TDC is top of compression or top of exhaust stroke. Your cam was removed. When you put it back in, you have to set it with the intake at 10 and the exhaust at 2 on the front cylinder. Then instal the chain.... done. DO NOT ROTATE THE CAM LOBES DOWNWARD AND OPEN ANY VALVES!!! YOU ARE AT TDC AND THE OPEN VALVE WILL HIT THE PISTON TOP. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
dowel position(sprocket off) will be close to 12 o clock position then you place it on head. Cam sprocket you should pick a number 1 2 3 then install sprocket. Most L20s it was 2 on sprocket. L16/18s are 1 but is performance cam it might be different. re watch vid as it expalnes what happen to you. set motor to TDC and head should be close to Top Dead center before install.
