I don't have an alternator at all so im looking to just swap out a whole new system and possibly get better amps for future mods possibly. Anyone know of any alternator swaps from a new car ? DanielC Posted February 20, 2015 Report Share Posted February 20, 2015 I put an alternator off some V-6 powered Nissan Pathfinder on a L-18 engine. See this thread. http://community.ratsun.net/topic/65156-testing-an-internally-regulated-alternator/ The alternator has the correct spacing between the lower ears, and puts the pulley in the proper location. Seems the easiest to do ! I ebayed the part number, went to "Applications" in the item information, searched the make (Chevy, Cadillac, etc.) at my local pick your part website car inventory and found an 74 Deville! On payday ill go to the JY and pick it up B) I'm gonna take the plug but should i take the belt aswell or is the one mentioned different? banzai510(hainz) Posted February 20, 2015 Report Share Posted February 20, 2015 hate to cut up the mount(buy a spare roadstermount). as you might go back to it as most holes thru the mount they will oblong over time and thus become a proplem unless you have a machine shop do it perfect. my 521 wouls alwasy vibrate loose then brake a bolt in the block or oblong the holes on the alternator. I went back to stock and never looked back. If a Datsun Nissan one fits ther bracket why no use that one. NO drilling ect. just make the jumpers to convert it. Quote Link to comment

Im going to keep an eye out for a stock alternator and ask around the 311 forum ! By making jumpers you mean making a plug harness that will be the same as the stock one so i can just plug it in ? banzai510(hainz) Posted February 20, 2015 Report Share Posted February 20, 2015 the conversion like the ones they do with the datsun 510 you unplug the voltreg and you dd 2 jumper wires on the correct wires in the plug and thats all there is to it. Unfortunaley Im not roadster expert. If the volt reg is same part number as the 510 70-72 then just use the 510 conversion. Its posted all over Ratsun. Ck th How To section Quote Link to comment

The GM 3-wire upgrade is a no-brainer. First thing I did on my roadster many years ago. Takes maybe an hour. Key thing is cutting straight when you modify the alt mount otherwise the belt may not quite line up straight. It'll work, but the belt will wear prematurely. You may also have to play with various spacers to line up the belt. If I was to do it again, I would consider a physically smaller alt as the GM alt is big and looks disportionately large on the roadster. (Most) Everything is organized fairly well without needing a separate wiki to throw more disorganized information in. A lot of us old-time 311s.org users all got cornfuzed. :confused: I'm hoping Steve changes it so you don't have to login to see the TechWiki links, etc, but we'll have to wait and see.
