What kind of diff is this?

When I bought my 510 the guy gave me a diff and he didn't to tell from what car it was. Theirs one in my 510 already and I was wondering what kind of diff is this.

here you go!

 

Now that your pictures exist in Photobucket.   Hover your mouse over the thumbnail you want, and a star appears in the right upper corner.  Hover your mouse over the star, and a menu appears.  Click "get links"

Go to the bottom one, "IMG code", click that.  It flashes yellow, and says "link copied".

 

Now go back you your post in Ratsun, type some stuff, and where you want the picture, hit "control-V"  (paste)

Now the code to display the picture is in your ratsun post.  Here is another one.

R-180. The E4600 housing is used on the early Z car. The E prefix is the give away. It was also used in the first ZX year '79. Around 80 the housing was upgraded. (different metal alloy?)  I think you will find a large K cast into the top.

have to guess its an r180 from a 240z and has 3.36 gearing.. 

 

what kind of car are you thinking of swapping this into? 3.36 gears will kill alot of bottom end speed, but give you more top end mph. 

 

what gearing do you have now?

I have a 4 speed datsun 510 i don't know much about gearing so i couldn't tell you what my gearing is

3.90 in N America.

 

Unless there is something wrong with your diff or you plan to add 50 more hp, stick with it. An R-180 is a little too robust for an L16 510 and totally the wrong ratio.

yeah, thats just not needed in a 510. 

 

let alone the gearing. the jump from 390s to 336s would kill the take off from stops. it would be like always taking off in 2nd. it would need a serious load of torque to pull 336s. 

 

was there a reason for getting this diff tho?

The guy I bought the car from intended to put and sr 20 in it

weird... factory sr20 was paired with 4.09 gearing, so 3.36 would be slow even with an SR. itd go through clutches fast. 

 

id stick with the stock 510 rear diff. the 3.90s are paired to the engine/trans combo thats in it..
