Bambino
I'm swamping out my L20b, to a l16, now will I be able to transfer my air filter pan from the l20 to the l16? And I'm still able to use my same radiator tho? Quote Link to comment
Tristin
Why would you be swapping to a smaller engine? But yes, most things should transfer over... the downpipe will be .75in too tall for the L16, but there should be enough room to push it down and still bolt up. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
^ All of that. Quote Link to comment
Bambino
Cuz ima rebuild the other. Nd not going to do it till later. it's jus to throw it in cuz it's my only ride. Need to get to places. The l16 came with trans, nd etc. except for the air filter pan. Jus needed to know if I could transfer it, or have to get one. Quote Link to comment

Take a deep breath and hit all the keys, that way we can all read you the first time and won't need to reread what you have "typed in" on the screen. Spellcheck anyone? 1 Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
I can read it fine. Good plan L16 revs harder in any case. More fun to drive by revving it up higher before shifting. Even if it is slower than the L20B. Quote Link to comment
Bambino
Thanks. Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
Doesn't a 77 L20b have a single exhaust outlet?? Are you going to switch intake and exhaust manifolds over from the L20b to the 1600? Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
I doubt the L16's straight out from the side, block vent pipe will fit through the L20B exhaust manifold. You would also have to switch the intake as well because it's bolted to the L20B exhaust. You may be able to slip a thinner L16 intake above it above it and leave the exhaust bolted shut... you'll see what I mean when you take it apart Quote Link to comment
Bambino
Okay thanks for the info Quote Link to comment
Bambino
Question. If the l16 came with everything already. Why would I need to swap some stuff over from the l20b? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The L20B uses a different exhaust manifold pipe... it's a large single round pipe. The L16 uses two smaller round pipes. They won't match up. If you have the L16 dual down pipe to the muffler, you could put it on with the L16. 1 Quote Link to comment
Bambino
Oh. Okay. Now that's making sense. Thanks mike Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Actually the PCV pipe fits fine. I have an L18 with the original '76 "stovepipe" manifolds and the straight-out PCV pipe. Just had to use the earlier (73-74) PCV hose with a little fudging. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Good to know Doug. I figured the upward mounted pipe on the L20Bs was to fix this 'problem'. Quote Link to comment
Bambino
Does anyone know how I can put the emission on the l16. It looks confusing from the l20. Quote Link to comment
Tristin
Is it an auto or a manual? Quote Link to comment
Bambino
Manual Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Best way is to simply swap EVERYTHING over, manifolds and all. The air injection system is part of the exhaust manifold so it has to stay there anyway. It should all bolt on. Easiest way would be to have 2 engine stands and side by side, and take everything of and transfer over. Didn't notice you're in Cali, so yeah, putting the L16 isn't such a simple task of clearing the smog stuff off and making a "clean" install. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Technically you can't swap an older year motor in and expect to pass the smog visual. Quote Link to comment
Bambino
Okay. And to think things couldn't get any worse Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Hey check and verify. If just for a short while you may not ever get caught. If you need a smog check to get this on the road then you'd better find out now. OH yeah... the SR20DET? again, there never was an SR20 used here, not RWD at least, so there are no emission standards for it, so no way to test and get a pass. Talk to a smog referee and ask him these questions. Quote Link to comment
