Good point, it may be cheaper in the end. Also keep an eye out for a pre '78 grill. Once you see it you'll know why.

Is this the one with the rings that protrude out around the headlights?  Like this?

As for the driveshaft I have one off a '79 620 for sale.  It would be the correct size you need.  Let me know if you want to do that route instead.  I live in Tracy, CA so not too far from you.  Also have a collection of parts so if you need anything else let me know.

you sure you want a Z-car tranny in a truck? Wayno says he kept burning his out and finally started building L series truck five speeds. I guess an LZ23 is more than the L20b though.

Wayno also uses his stuff as a work horse. Not as a regular driver.

Post pics of Zcar trans to verify what it is.

Z car transmissions are identical to truck transmissions, except in gear ratio.  So there's no difference in strength.  In fact in '77-78 the only difference was the speedometer drive cog- even the ratios were the same.

Now, using a dogleg (car transmission) would be a different issue.  Those are the weak ones.  I've blown up 2 of them, and I don't even drive them hard.
