hynd5224
Hi all! I saw this forum a while back when I was lookin for a 1200 and I decided to join last weekend when I bought one! Anyways, on to what you probably clicked on this thread for. The car! Its a 71 coupe that is pretty much all stock other than the weber carb. Its got a few dents and some really rusty floors and one rusty fuel tank! My plan is to get it so I can drive it to work and hopefully patch the floors and do some body work later down the road. I dropped the tank earlier this week and the fuel was about the color of the car! The search for a new tank has begun... I found a few different places that list the tank on their site, but don't say its in stock, and don't say it isnt. They are also in the range of 350-400 bucks! but I don't really think this tank will hold after rust removal. Today I used a gas can to get it tuned up. New plugs, adjusted the points and timing. It runs pretty good now, but I think I'll adjust the valves and maybe clean the carb next weekend. How bad that gas was, some of it had to make it to the carb! I also started pulling the dash apart to fix some things, the speedo is toast! Searching for a new one yields the same results as the gas tank so far. Other than that, everything else works after a little cleaning and some new bulbs. Now the important part, Pics! On the way home Nice clean gas.... and the rest -Charlie 1 Quote Link to comment
RedBanner
Wow, wow, that looks to be a VERY clean coupe. Congrats. And welcome very good first post Quote Link to comment

Morrisun
I have the speedometer and some other small parts, MAY have a gas tank in good shape, what area is the car now located? Quote Link to comment
Davec
Since the car came from Vancouver, WA. And Welcome, Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
My 710 plugged the filter twice on the drive home after buying it. The gas came out like this too. I removed the tank and swished gravel around in it, rinsed and installed it with a new filter. The old gas??? hell it's way to expensive to throw away so I used an old filter and funnel and gravity fed it through. Came out as clear as champagne. Flaky stuff left over. Quote Link to comment
hynd5224
Thanks guys! It is a pretty clean car, other than the rust holes. I was hoping to find some floor pans to weld into the floor, but the only ones I've found are on ebay from a guy in Australia and shipping is ridiculous! I guess I could hit up one of the local sheet metal shops and get them to bend some parts, but it'd be cool just to find a good price on some that are pre-made. Morrisun, I would be interested in the speedo and I'd love to find a factory tac to put in there too if you've got an in on one. I'm located in central WA. Davec was right, bought the car in Vancouver, WA. I've noticed a lot of people on here are from the northwest. Datzenmike, I might have to try the gravel idea, did you coat the inside with something afterwards to prevent future rusting? My car ran on that gas, only died when I ran out! Then I found out it needed a filler hose as well and decided to drop the tank. Oh and I didn't waste that gas either, I poured it into our waste oil furnace and it became heat for the day! -Charlie Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Remove the sender. It has a ring and a O ring gasket. You have to tap on the tabs to rotate the ring to loosen it. Clean the (gas resistant) gasket and you can re use it or source from a hardware store. Clean washed driveway gravel. Roll and shake the tank to dislodge any rust, give it a good shaking. Dump out and rinse with garden hose. I left in the sun for the afternoon to dry. No I didn't coat with anything as I planned to use the car. Fresh gas regularly keeps the moisture out. (it had been sitting since at least '02 and possibly much longer as this was when the owner died and it was sold in an estate sale) I put a new filter on and my wife has driven it for two summers now without a problem. hynd5224
Datzenmike, I'll give that a shot. Gravel is free and I don't have anything to lose but time, right? Estate sale? Ironic. The PO of mine said it'd been sitting for 6 years and he bought it in an estate sale. -Charlie Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Mine was bought up by a buddy about a hundred miles away and he trailered it home from Victoria. I think he had it a couple of years in his 'barn' but had to downsize and it sat outside for a winter. He realized he wasn't going to get to it and offered to sell it to me. He had the title in his name but never put it on the road. So hasn't been on the road from '02 to about '10. Has a few receipts for the '80s and had 23K (miles, this was the last miles odometer year in Canada before the switch to metric Kms and about 1/3 it's life has been sitting) on the clock. Has the original tires and muffler exhaust system on it. Floor is pristine, all the carpets, fires right up. Body was....ok (dents, scratches but no holes) I sent it to the body shop to have it fixed and painted. Quote Link to comment
graveltrapp
Greeting earthling, its cool to see another 1200 getting back into service. There are lots of good folks on the forum so keep plugging on the keyboard for any info. Another great site with an astonishing wiki is http://datsun1200.com/modules/news/ use that search bar and most anything you can think of has already been documented. A 620 tach will drop right in, and although almost as rare, they are out there. Figure on at least $100, not cheap but start searching, they go quick. Quote Link to comment

I've been to datsun1200.com they do have some good info! I also found http://www.carpartsmanual.com and they have exploded diagrams and part numbers for the 1200. I used a lot of those part numbers to search and found http://www.nissanparts.cc, http://www.courtesyparts.com, http://www.nissanpartszone.com, and http://www.everythingnissan.com With the exception of everythingnissan.com they all do not explicitly say they have the parts. Has anyone used any of these places? I'm curious because nissanparts.cc lists a stock tach for a 1200 for $102 along with other parts that I would think went out of production a long time ago. -Charlie Quote Link to comment

hynd5224
Welcome to the club thats a gorgeous coupe!!! i would be lying if i said i wasnt eyeballing that very car myself ;) Thanks! It looks good in those pictures, just wait till I get some pictures of the floor and trunk. I wouldn't exactly plant my foot firmly on the floor if you know what I mean. The seller mentioned someone else looked at it 2 days before I did. Ironically, the last one I was eyeballing I later found pictures of on this forum. It was a blue (with a little rust) couple that has an A15 swapped in it. It was on the Portland CL as well, about a month or so back I think. Quote Link to comment

Ouch! that makes for a costly few seconds when the wind catches the hood! I've almost done that before, but fortunately i was driving slow enough to catch it. welcome. i have used nissanpartszone and everythingnissan when rockauto didn't have what we needed. all were fine to deal with. hynd5224
I don't post on forums much, but I was under the impression from a lot of reading (not specifically at this forum) that some people are picky about where threads are placed. But I do like this section... its all 1200's and I don't have to surf through tons of 510 builds Quote Link to comment

hynd5224
Nissanparts.cc is an excellent company to deal with as well. got my lash pads through them. Yes, I just tried to deal with them too. They are nice to deal with, just didn't have any of the parts I was looking for. In case anyone wonders, according to them, no nissan dealer in the US has the below for a coupe: Fuel tank (evapo) Tach Front seat belts (2pt) filler hose (evapo) Fuel sender Ignition lock cylinder assembly Oh well, it was worth a try right? rusty12ver
Are these parts you need as well? Quote Link to comment
hynd5224
yes they are, except I should have a fuel tank and sender on the way soon and should add a DCH340 to that list. Do you have any? Quote Link to comment
