sungproto
i recently bought a five speed for my l20b on my 73 620. It is longer than my 4speed. What drive shaft would fit without modification? Or should i just modify the drive shaft? Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
How long is the new transmission? If it's a FS5W71B 5 speed it should measure about 31.5''. Interesting.. I've never heard of a 620 having a shortie 4 speed. I thought that was 521's, and cars but I could be mistaken. Quote Link to comment
Ranman72
get one from a later model 620 comes with the longer trans stock Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Early 620 comes with shorty transmission. So jist get a driveshaft from later 620 - but note that long bed, king cab, short bed all differ. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 620 has a two piece driveshaft with a carrier bearing in the middle bolted to the rear crossmember where the torsion bars mount. This crossmember is in the same location for all King Cab, Long Bed and Regular cab short wheelbase trucks. Any differences in frame length are to the rear of the crossmember and are in the length of the rear driveshaft. That said the 620 had two transmission lengths 26" and 31.5" and this is reflected in the front driveshaft lengths. If you have the earlier short tranny with 'long' front driveshaft and switch to a later long tranny all you need do is get the 'shorter' front driveshaft with it. The 'shorter' front driveshafts were on the '74 and newer 620s. Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
And which 620 do you have? Long, Short or King Cab? Quote Link to comment
sungproto
i have the long one Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If you have a '73 620 it's considered a regular cab short wheelbase. Or just plain short wheelbase. In '75 a regular cab long wheelbase option was added. Basically an earlier truck but with 9.39" of extra frame added with an earlier cab and a longer box. In '77 the King Cab option was added. It's a long wheelbase frame with a short wheelbase box and an extended cab length. Quote Link to comment
DanielC
You can take your front driveshaft to a driveline shop, and get it shortned. Quote Link to comment

Yes I can but if someone has a spare, I would rather buy one that is not modified. Anyways, just trying to see if anyone could help. I already took out the four speed, hate to put it back in there.
