Is this the right Z to get my 5 speed out of?

I found this at the JY today and before I pull/pay for it tomorrow I want to make sure this is correct. I know it's an L series, but I'm not sure if that's the only thing I need to know about it. Besides checking that it shifts into all the gears fine is there anything I can do to make sure I'm not pulling a POS?

How far did your shifter move back?

OP...like he said. Non-turbo Z. You found the golden ticket with that one.

I want to say around 3-4 inches.

If your familiar with 521's , you can kinda see where the original spot is supposed to be.

Oh shit. That's not bad at all.

I've half-heartedly looking for one.

Full force now.

Buy yes. I own a couple 521's.

Look at drain bung it has a magnet on the end that traps ferrous metal. It will normally have a black 'paste' on it. Maybe some fine particles.

Relatively normal bung

Measure the front shaft of your driveline(assuming you have a 2 piece). Next time you hit the yards, grab a front shaft with carrier bearing from a 620 that is approx 4" shorter than your stock one. This way you don't have to pay someone to shorten your stock one. I just can't remember which truck I pulled mine from. King cab and regular cab could be different.

Sorry for the thread jack,dwnshfter

Jeffe, I think they (front) are for the most part the same length. The differences in truck lengths are in the frame behind the carrier bearing on the reg or KC cab. I would thing the rear driveshafts are different lengths.

Hhmmm , maybe I have it backwards? I swear, my memory is $hit.

Ok, grab the the driveline half that's 4" shorter than your stock one.

Don't change anything. You have a '79 right? The zx will swap right in... it's the same exact length as your old 5 speed.

HOWEVER

Being a '79 you are running a 4.11 ratio rear end and the 5 speed (or 4 spd) you have now is differently geared to allow an easier take off in first. Installing a ZX will be a mutherfucking huge jump in gear ratios. Your overdrive ratio is about 12% the zx is twice that at just over 25%. You may have trouble maintaining highway speeds into a light wind.

'79 ratios

1st.... 3.594

2nd... 2.246

3rd.... 1.415

4th.... 1.000

5th..... 0.882

'81- zx ratios

1st..... 3.062

2nd... 1.858

3rd..... 1.308

4th..... 1.000

5th..... 0.745

You meant 4 speed right? I thought it swapped right in, but it's been so long since I was looking at doing this so I wasn't sure.

Oh yours is a 4 spd??? Well exact same gears without 5th.

Don't you mean by popular request?

........ (yes)
