3lfk1ng
Hello everyone, I have been surfing Ratsun for a while now and finally decided to make a post. Quick Background: 1971 Datsun 510 2-dr with a KA24DE. My brother-in-law and myself are currently in the process of restoring a Datsun 510 for my wife. She wants AC in the 510 and she was also spoiled with the 270hp /310tq that her Audi A3 had, so she wants the KA24DE to be a KA24DET. My brother in law doesn't think that it is possible to do both AC and a TURBO in a Datsun 510. My brother in law owns a 240z (See the May 2011 issue of Modified Magazine) so he is quite familiar with swapping around various parts and pieces from different cars, we just don't know what's needed for the 510. The 510 is currently receiving a full walnut shell media blast at Polyrock in Chino, CA. In the meantime my brother in law and I are going over certain engine configurations. The question: Is it possible to have a KA24DET with Air Conditioning inside a Datsun 510, if so... what should I be looking for? If not, we may go NA build instead. Thank you for your "Dime" -Thanks Radio :D Drew Quote Link to comment
RadioRedline
NO No! You Mean "Thank you for your DIME" Hahahaha Radio Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
More santa barbarans...weeeee. Have you looked at one of the original 510 AC units? I think I saw someone here, or on the510realm, with a Subaru AC system. I don't see why you couldn't get one to work, it will obviously just be a matter of plumbing and probably custom compressor bracketry, and ducting to your preference. Quote Link to comment
3lfk1ng
More santa barbarians Fixed :D It always amazes me how small this town is yet I run into locals on the internet all the time. Yeah, I figured anything is possible, I'm just wondering if anyone has links to a build or if someone has performed said mods. Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Here was the Subaru AC unit a guy had in his - sounds like it came with the car, then he pulled it to sell, so not many details: http://www.the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=16231 You may also want to take a look at www.vintageair.com and see what it would take to get some universal components to fab up your own custom setup. Here is an original 510 dealer-installed AC housing. You'd probably have to frankenstein it with some more modern components, but it would probably give you the cleanest install: Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Is your question "how do I fit a condensor, radiator and intercooler all in the same spot" or "how do I fit the turbo and A/C compressor in the same spot"? Quote Link to comment
3lfk1ng
Both actually, thank you. I'm looking for any experience or advice on running a KA24DET w/ AC (stock 510 AC or otherwise) The condenser, radiator, and intercooler location was my brother-in-laws main concern. He doesn't think it's possible to fit all 3 in such a small area, I think minor modifications could make it work but my knowledge of Datsun and necessary parts are very-limited - I'm new to JCC's. Can it be done? Has it been done? What is needed to make it happen? Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Can it be done? Has it been done? What is needed to make it happen? Yes. Yes. And a lot. :P I did it once upon a time, CA18ET with A/C. Used a rectangular intercooler that was wide but not tall (7" tall, 28" wide core) mounted as low as possible (the top was even with the bottom of the bumper, trimmed the lower valence to just fit around it) and a condensor mounted right above it that was similar (13" tall, 28" wide). As I recall the condensor was from a third-gen Camaro (82-91). Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
You could also try a Starion intercooler mounted in a similar fashion, ala Kevin Koford's KA24DET 510... Quote Link to comment
hang_510
i saw a DET being set up for keeping AC, never saw it finished. plan was a small condenser between the IC & rad. It always amazes me how small this town is yet I run into locals you make 4 i know of up there, maybe 5. Quote Link to comment
yellowdatsun
Adding a/c is a crap ton of work, and adding a turbo is a crap ton of work........so you'll be adding TWO tons of crap to the engine bay. I'm sure they can both fit, it's just a matter of how much work do you want to do, and how long do you want to keep working on it? We have a local guy who is turboing a VG30, with a/c, and I can tell you that his engine bay is STUFFED. Lots of things are not easy to get to anymore. Sure the Audi had 270hp, but knowing the Germans, it was probably also a LOT heavier than a 510. Have you ever driven a 510 with a KA24DE? You'll probably be surprised at how nice they are as is. If it was me, building a car for my girl, I'd just stick with the a/c for the time being. If she get's bored of it, then do the turbo later. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Build the car for yourself not her. Most women hate 510s or will hate them. Most like smash on porpose to get a new car from the Husband.Esp if she is usd to a Audi than a rattly old leaky stinky 510. This is Common amoung Subaru WRX guys wanting a 510 then want to sell them in about 1.5 years complaining of the same thing. Do the KA for your self !!!!!!!!! Get Jeffs/Robs Can/Am relay box also.To help wiring it up. AC is nice for a daily. But 510s I would pass. Its just a cleaner setup and just alot of crap as you need the space and making the car front heavy Quote Link to comment
DISLEXICDIME
Will the car have a power rack Quote Link to comment

3lfk1ng
Thanks for all your replies! Every one of your contributions is greatly appreciated. Everyone here seems very polite and welcoming. It's a welcome feeling having come from VWVortex. Here's a quick update before I reply to everyone, this is not my build thread I just want to update fellow readers on the direction we are going: The car has been completely blasted with walnut shells. The new floorpans are being welded in as I type. New rear quarter panels are being stamped in Canada. 2 Sparco Chrono Road seats have been purchased. Datsport kit aquired - https://lh5.googleus...3A/datsport.JPG Next step, shaving, filling and painting. We decided we are going to do the turbo kit at a later point in time after rebuilding the car. We are going to focus on the installation of AC for the time being. you make 4 i know of up there, maybe 5. Wow, maybe we should have a local car meet some time. We will more than likely take the 510 to car shows. She is growing to appreciate car shows more now that she knows all the hard work behind the cars. I hope to see you around. Look for my GTi with a rollcage in the back, you'll probably hear me before you see me. Build the car for yourself not her. haha, she chose the 510. I didn't pick it for her. We were at a European car show and she fell head over heels in love a 510 that was parked on the outskirts. Licence plate : V6NSIDE, you may recognize it: http://jalopnik.com/...owcar-for-19000 My brother-in-law and I are just building it for her. She chose the 510 as her little dream car and she has no intentions of giving it up. She is very serious about this build, as are we. Most like smash on porpose to get a new car from the Husband. Haha, she is the breadwinner in this relationship. I have little funding to assist in this project, it's all her. She tells us what she wants, and we just tell her what her car needs. Do the KA for your self !!!!!!!!! It already had a KA before we gutted the car. Get Jeffs/Robs Can/Am relay box also.To help wiring it up. Her brother wires up domestic and japanese classic cars on the side. He is in charge of that job, I'll let him know though, thank you very much. Sure the Audi had 270hp, but knowing the Germans, it was probably also a LOT heavier than a 510. Have you ever driven a 510 with a KA24DE? Oh definately, her Audi A3 weighs in at around 3,300lbs whereas the 510 weights in at roughly half that I would assume. When we bought the car it already had a KA24DE installed and it ran perfectly. She drove it for around 1,000miles, so she is familiar with the power of the KA24DE inside the 510. It's just not as potent as the 135hp/ liter in the A3. We will more than likely add a turbo in the future, for now we are going to worry about spending that extra money to ensure that the car is built proper. If it was me, building a car for my girl, I'd just stick with the a/c for the time being. If she get's bored of it, then do the turbo later. Yeah, we are going to stick with just AC for now. Will the car have a power rack No and strangely she prefers it this way. She is not prissy in any respect, I couldn't ask for a better wife. Don't wanna stereotype people, but if she drove an Audi... haha, I completely understand. She loves the classic Japanese cars and the way they feel. She loves her little A3 but she likes the raw feeling of the 510 as well. It's a completely different feeling, she appreciates it. Quote Link to comment
DISLEXICDIME
I was not asking if it had a power rack because it id for your wife. I asked because if it was not for the quick response from my power rack I would have wrecked my sr car the first week I had it. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I think a KA already has 135 to 155 HP already in a little 510 it should be more than enough power already. I rode in Jeffs S13 with a 250$ KA he picked the was throwing that thing around like it was nothing. Should be even better in a tin can 510 The CAN/AM realy box is THE SHIT. Its SIMPLE and CLEAN and has LEDs to tell you whats bad and if the fuse pops.More or less MORON Prof. If this car is going to be that Nice I would get one(if I went KA/SR). I like the datsport kit!!!!!! Baz is a good guy Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
I think a KA already has 135 to 155 HP already in a little 510 it should be more than enough power already. Exactly. It will be plenty fast with just the KA in it. Smart move to wait on the turbo. Took me a few months just to get used to the power of the KA, then a year or so to dial in the suspension better to make use of that much power. Can't imagine it with a turbo... Quote Link to comment
