Braden
drop the bottom end, measure bore, hone, and replace with appropriate rings, bada bing bada boom, like maybe 80 bucks Quote Link to comment
Papi Chulo
valve seals maybe, more details please. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
You can buy a very good condition used L16 for $400... why pay $800 for someone to rebuild it? Quote Link to comment
The datsun kid
all i know its smoking but it dosent feel like any power loss so idk plus i have no idea how many miles are on it i guess i just need to pull it and see but where could i possibley get one of these good condition used l16's? Charlie69
If it is white smoke you are burning water/coolant. Quote Link to comment
The datsun kid
its kiinda hard to tell it looks white but theyre seems to be some blueish to it and it lingers for a min Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Smoke all the time? random haze out the pipe? Smokes only on start-up, not too noticeable when driving? Slight smoke on acceleration but big cloud when letting off the gas? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
where could i possibley get one of these good condition used l16's? Right here -- but he wants $300 for it. And you'll have to take the five-speed with it. Quote Link to comment
The datsun kid
it only smokes when you down shift and when you give it gas when u have the choke on but it dosent smoke when your going well i cant see it anyways Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Chances are the drivers behind you can see it smoking. They don't get better with time, only worse. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
is the choke on longer than it needs to be. Quote Link to comment
The datsun kid
no i only have the choke on for like 2 to 3 mins i usally dont have it on long enough haha Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Sounds like rings. Rebuilding an L for under $800 is easy enough, building it up is another matter. Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
Grand Auto/Kragen/O'Reillys Quote Link to comment
The datsun kid
sooo my grandpa figured it out my carb that the guy before me put on isnt workin right g pa says its loading up and its not the rings oh and he told me to put my figer in the tailpipe and check it! theyre was soot or (un burned fuel) coated inside soo he says i need a new carb the weber is a 32/36 right? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Bluish-white smoke is not caused by the carburetor. Black smoke is. So check it carefully. If you have black smoke or soot in the tailpipe, you probably do not need a new carburetor. You need to find the cause of the problem and fix it. It's usually just an incorrectly set float level or vacuum leaks e.g. power valve or choke pull-off. If you pay someone to fit a new weber 32/36, they will change the hoses and it will run great -- cha ching. Or for $0 you can usually fix it too. Quote Link to comment
The datsun kid
i thought it was bluish black but he said its not and i wanted to put that weber on anyways cuz it has the stock hitachi on it and no i totally get wat ur sayin im gunn take it to my cousins buddys shop and see what they sya expert opinion never hurts!! Quote Link to comment
motavated
Just pull it out or get another side engine. The engine is fucked or about to die. But why even bother with a l16? I would drive it till it gives you problems and swap in a hopefully better engine. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, bluish-black is not anything you look for. Look for: * White * Bluish-white * Black Quote Link to comment
