OK, so according to the Wiki the L16 was made from '70 thru '74 and put in the 510, 521 & 620. It says the L18 was from '72 to '76.

My memory is that in California the 620 had a L16 in '73 and an L18 in '74 with different emmissions to comply with the smog law. Then I remember the L20 being in the 620 from '75 on.

There were like half years too I seem to remember. I had a '71 and a half 521 that I bought new in California. It had an L16 with a smog pump that ran off the fan pully. That set up sucked, so I sold it to my brother so I could get the new bullit-side '73 620. It had the same 620 but with no smog pump and different emission stuff.

I had a '68 510 with the L16. Here's what I got on Wiki:

L16

The L16 was a 1.6 L (1595 cc) engine produced from 1968 through 1973 for the Datsun 510. It produces 96 hp through 1971 then 92 hp.

Applications:

* Datsun 510 sedan

* Datsun PL521 pick-up (1970 - 1972)

* Datsun PL620 pick-up (1972 - 1974)

All L16s have some emissions equipment. '68-69 was simply the PCV and some point added the hot air intake. 1970 added the dual-point distributor. The 521 added an air pump, but the 510 did not- the 510 instead used an evaporative emissions system and an electric choke. The 521 added the evaporative system and auto choke late, in '72 (and removed the air pump). So, for the last year, the L16 in both the 620 and 510 had the dual point distributor, PCV, auto choke, hot air intake, BCDD, and evaporative control system (vapor tank).

As for L16 blocks...

There are 2 major variants... the early, common blocks have the PCV tube sticking straight out of the block, and the late type have the vertical port like the L20B. The late L16 is actually a Z16 casting (just like late L20Bs from mid '79 on are actually Z20 castings)
