  1. I have a nice source for EVA locally here. Going to sharpen my whittling knife and get busy. Located the torque rods today. I see where they go but no idea how to achieve it. Looks like a quick way to get the fingers pinched big time. On the plus side, starting to get a handle on where all the spare parts are. Too many boxes to keep track of.
  2. Go look on the registry on 311s.org. And get that car on there if it's not already. The 310's are cool and all but the 311's from 66 forward have much better brakes and hydraulics. Sounds like you found an early one for sure. I owned spl311 105 for a brief moment in time. She went to live with someone who just had to have her.
  3. That stripe is a 510 performance upgrade. Good for the illusion of at at least an extra 10 mph.
  4. "It's not easy being green." Kermit the Frog Good job so far. I have the Volvo swap on mine and ame just about to put in the RX-7 rear end. That will give me LSD and disks in the rear. All of this is very well documented over on 311s.org. Keep at it. Some times these cars are hard to wake up after a long sleep but worth all of the effort. See you at Shasta.
  5. I did the Volvo swap on my 69 2000. You are going to love it. Stops on a dime and gives you change. No more brake fade either. Pretty easy swap that is well documented on 311s.org.
  6. Thanks guys. I spent the better part of the day messing with the back hatch. Hinges are mounted and on the correct sides after a couple of attempts. I installed the brackets that hold the torsion bars but the bars themselves are MIA at the moment. They are in the pile of parts somewhere, of that I am certain. This sure would be a lot easier if this were a Roadster. There are a ton of parts on this little car. Probably go fast if I had been the one who had taken it apart in the first place too. I am in the process of finding the rubber gaskets that go around the hinge arm. No luck so far. Are they available aftermarket?
  7. Thanks Pete. How about the other end where it attaches to the car. I am starting to wonder if I have the wrong parts. Nothing lines up as far as I can tell. Unbelievable how fast Canby is approaching.
  8. What Pete said. The thickness of a relined shoes is often times thicker than OEM. There is not enough room to let off the adjuster to let the drum spin freely. If you grind down the end of the shoe where it goes into the cylinder it changes the angle of the shoe. Most likely will work anyway but why not do it right. I have run into this on the last two Roadster rear brake jobs that I have done. He good news is that the rear brakes only do about 20% of the work but you still want them to operate correctly.
  9. I hope you marked it up before you sold it to him....
  10. Get the drums turned and then find an old school brake shop that can arch the shoes to fit. Not too many places will do this anymore due to the dust and liability it creates.
  11. Anybody have pictures of how the hinge and lift assembly goes together on a wagon? I didn't take it apart and want to know what order it goes back together in. Anyone? Buhler?
  12. Pretty sure I have at least one in the 32 Apple boxes of parts that came with the Black Bird. The PO never had just one of anything,as far as I can tell. Not to mention a bunch of Roadster parts that got thrown in for good measure.
  13. PM me a list of parts you need. I am about to tear down a 67 early parts car and am only keeping a few bits and pieces. The rest is up for grabs.
  14. 311s.org is your next stop.
  15. It's that time of year again. Happening Friday-Sunday in Portland, OR. Well worth the effort. I never fail to come away inspired to up build quality. Usually cheap tall boys too, as if you need more of a reason to go. http://the1moto.com Over and out.
  16. I am a week or two away from stuffing a R20 stroker and 5 Spd into the Blackbird. I will fully document that process complete with pictures and cuss words.
  17. For the Roadster, the cross member is different. It either steps up or down for the 5 speed. I can't remember which off hand. There are rumors of making the 4 spd member work by flipping it over. Make sure that you get the correct arm for the throw out bearing also. 4 speed one is different.
  18. The back plate on the motor is twice as thick for the 5spd vs the 4 speed on an R16. You can double up the plate if you don't have one off of a U20. If you don't use the thicker plate you run the risk of messing up the thrust bearings. Been discussed to death on 311s.org.
  19. I attended this last year and had a blast. Great group of guys, fantastic cars and really good food at the banquet. Worth the drive. The organizers want the word to get out that this show is open to all Datsuns 73 and older. Sure, it's Roadster nirvana but let's get some Ratsun mojo going this year. See you there. http://mtshastaroadstermeet.311s.org/
  20. Get over to 311s.org and register this car if you have not already done so. The anti spam answer to the new user login is "Datsun Sport" if I recall. Nobody ever reads the home page all the way through and misses that bit of information. Great site and a very friendly bunch of Roadster nuts who know the right answer to just about any question you can think of. I have the same user name over there. Welcome to the addiction. Rear end width?

Anyone know the width of the rear end for the wagons? Face to face of the axels. Starting the final parts push on the Blackbird. Going to borrow a Roadster trick and go RX-7 GSL SE with LSD and disk brakes. Anyone? Anyone?
  22. H20 is a great option for the Roadster. Shifty has one in his car, Scraps, with a set of 40mm Mikuni's on it and she is a little monster. The only complaint is that the head can't keep up with the carbs. That will be fixed with a fresh R16 head that has had some port work done and a bigger set of valves. A cheaper way to get a stoker motor than building one from scratch. There are pages of info on this over on 311s.org..
  23. Don't change a thing cosmetically. Perfect. I have those same wheels on mine in black and another set unpainted. Looked a long time for those. Very hard to find that aren't all bent from being curbed. They are Dan Gurney Victory's. Get over to www.311s.org for all your Roadster needs and questions.
  24. Yes you can, but not with a wrench..... As my Pappy used to say, "If it can't be done with a chainsaw and a mini grinder, it can't be done."
  25. What's the hardest thing about riding a scooter? Telling your best friend that you are gay.
