  1. I asm having trouble finding a new clutch/coil. Any ideas where I might get one?
  2. And they pretty much cost what im paying, probably substantially more, mine round out to $1.50 per bolt, my local hardware store wants quite a bit more than that.
  3. it would seem that I need a new AC compressor clutch. AC is cold as crap, but the clutch is having issues engaging unless you kick it on at speed. Unfortunately the parts dont seem to exist anymore.....
  4. Thanks a bunch!, Yeah what is really nuts is there is only 5 plating companies in the US that actually do black chrome. I just happened to pick the one that essentially created the process.
  5. I'm a machinist, we make wheels at my job. So we are powdercoating them there. $300, yes, very pricey. However Olymco plating essentially developed Black chrome 30 years ago. Their whole plating process is military grade, they have mil spec numbers and very thing, so it's worth it to me. Regular bright chrome would have only cost me $80 Edit: avoid Olymco plating like the plague, they screwed me for alot of money, read ahead.....
  6. I had a blown head gasket in my Honda K20, it had absolutely perfect compression. Only way I could tell it had a BHG was that it was slowly eating coolant and the exhaust smelled like it when cold. I still track raced it in this condition!! (and at 255,000 miles, Behold the power of K-series!!!).... LOL. But they CAN be hard to track down, or they can be easy as hell to spot. If your exhaust smells nothing like sweetness, or coolant, then I would say there is probably no coolant mixing with combustion gasses. Have you lost any coolant since you filled it? There is coolant running through the throttle body, but not in a way that it can leak, and you would also smell it if it were coming from anywhere like that. In every early Maxima I have seen in person (that makes 4) the temp guage sits between 1/8 and 1/4 when it is warmed up and running at the right temp with a good thermostat. If you dont trust your guage, you could use a cheapo analog guage from Autozone. No, the 280zx came with the 3 speed auto only, which was also a weaker transmission. The 4 speed will haul a boat. In all honesty, This is actually one of the few Autos that I have EVER driven that I didnt mind so much and actually shifted really nicely. Maybe mine was an odd experience, but I liked the L4N transmission. Unlike almost all other Datsun transmissions, the L4N has a locking torque converter Another advantage to the 4 speed is that it has a one piece driveshaft. Which is why I had to switch to 5 speed, the driveshaft was blown and it was either go 5 speed, or have a new driveshaft built for the auto, and I was not about to pay for that. The cold start injector is in front of the intake manifolt, it has a plug similar to the other injectors on it. Unplug it and see if your start issue changes at all. I reccomend getting a real factory service manual. It has to be an 83 or 84, because 82's only came in 3 speed auto. Seriously there is so much stuff in that manual that I would be totally oblivious to if I hadnt bought one.
  7. You can get good compression sometimes if you have a bad head gasket. Does it smoke at all? Does your exhaust smell like coolant? If no to both of these, there is low likeliness for a head gasket problem. If your radiator is good, it shouldnt come past about 1/8th-1/4 of the way on the gauge. I am honestly thinking the empty radiator may have been a fluke. Seems you have good cooling though. but with old radiators you should always keep an eye on that temp gauge. The 4 speed auto will definitely hold a stock L28ET. You have to clean the window switches with some DeOxit, or contact cleaner. Just take the switch out and fill it through a side hole with cleaner and actuate the switch a bunch of times. Not sure on the last one, could be something to do with your cold start injector, unhook it and see what happens.
  8. The car was probably built by some dumb ass CNC engineer, NOT a real car person. Everything on the build is there for looks, not functionality. Theres tons of stuff that I picked out that was just "why would you even do that??" because it looks cool and draws your eye to it. Otherwise, that thing is no better than a piece of 1 million dollar ugly jewelery. From a production standpoint, the person/people who did this all had more money and time than brains. When I set a machine up to run parts, it runs like 100-400 of them, not 6-7 for one job and then its done. I mean more power to being able to do all of this, but it was either done over a period of year during machine downtime, or it was done in a shop that has FAR less work than money. All I know is from looking at that car, there is a guy with about one ton worth of holding fixtures for all those parts, and all those fixtures got used about twice.
  9. All that work and he is using motorcycle brakes.
  10. Wow, I HAVE TO get one of those, that is awesome. That would come in handy on like %15-20 of the vehicles I work on. Shit, this is all the cool stuff that the dealership guys know about and those of us that dont work as techs professionally anymore are out of the loop on. Haha.
  11. hahahahaha, I knew I couldnt be the only one who saw that!
  12. Thanks for the compliment, I try to get all my information in the forum so everyone else can use it at their will. I am always looking, so far I have only seen one other Maxima at the salvage yards. And thats where my pedals, transmission, and driveshaft came from. Now that I can see the pics, you have a VERY beautiful Maxima, take good care of her, That is one of my favorite colors. I was watching Orange is the New Black (with the wife) on Netflix, and there is an episode with an 84' Maxima in my color in it, during an 80's flashback of one of the inmates who has cancer. I wonder where that one is now, cause it was freakin mint.
  13. Congrats on the Starion. I have a huge soft spot for them. Actually all Mitsubishis. Good luck.
  14. Nobody is talking about how much structural support an aftermarket sunroof adds. But your pillars definitely DO add support and WILL cause the car to be twisted if not put on a jig in some manner when cutting them and the whole roof off. OP needs to just cut a piece of sheet metal and weld it in and do the body work. Period.
  15. When your viewing the image in photobucket, click the "IMG" link and copy it here, thats the one that will display the pic. You can use any 71b L series transmission. But you have to use your Automatic transmission crossmember and modify it to mount the 5 speed. Automatic Maximas have a different floor stamping than manual ones. The transmission tunnel on the Automatic is wider, as is the crossmember. There is a whole how to, or rather a "how I did it" section of my "Maxima 910" thread. You will however need a 5 speed driveshaft, or have a one piece custom made. And the biggest pain in the ass to find is the pedals, you need the whole clutch pedal assembly but for the brake you only need the pedal part. The master cylinder is $15.99 at autozone, same with the slave cylinder. I used a 240sx stainless braided clutch line and it fit perfect, you might need to get a couple fittings though.
  16. Great stuff man, just awesome. Why was your receiver/dryer so expensive? I got mine for $57 Gotta love that working AC, did the original lines fit?
  17. Inline 6 engines really are an addiction.
  18. This shit is so bad when I look at it I feel like my head is gonna explode like that guy in Scanners.
  19. I picked up the hardware today and finished taping off the rims. Hardware was a laughable $15.90 for 100. I bought two boxes since the chrome place minimum charge is $300, and they can do 200 bolts for that price.
  20. We rolled up the mountain on sunday And we were all cold the whole way there and back.
  21. My datsun also took me (and 3 other people) up a mountain.
  22. Welcome to Ratsun. I am a bit of a Maxima guru so if you need to know anything else, let me know, you can PM me if you like. Good luck on your purchase and fixing your little issues, these cars run really great when they are tuned up and in good maintenance.
  23. wow, Ann Coulter is a pretty tremendous moron, and a representation of why we have no good conservatives.

the thing is, Coulter is an entertainer not a journalist. She's the equivalent of Andy Dick trying to portray herself as the equal of Bob Woodward. That is to say she's a chimp attempting to pass herself off as a brain-surgeon.
