Rack and and pinion from a Z car in a 620?

I‘d find a power rack.  I want to but a D21 power box in my 521 project.  I don’t know why but D21 steering boxes don’t get slop in them like the older guys.

Do you know anyone who's put a z car rack into a 620? D21=Hardbody?

no I don’t know of anyone.  Would the reason be to just get a better steering feel?

My 620 steering box is sloppy and it seems like there's no option for replacements other then used ones or trying to make something else fit. My 620 is a daily driver and sloppy steering isn't cool to deal with every day. I believe that racks last much longer than steering boxes do.

In the long run, having Redhead Steering Gear rebuild a stock steering box will likely be the cheapest..............not cheap, but the cheapest in the long run.  Was just talking about converting 510's to rack & pinion (510 steering is similar to the 620)............JB Coachweks just closed down, they were the only company I know of making a rack kit for the 510.  The amount of proper fabrication, with LOTS of math geometry etc, is kinda staggering for the inexperienced (have no idea what your fab skills are).  My old boss was a master at custom suspension/steering geometry in race cars, but the cost was staggering!  The issue with a Z car rack is that there are no parts available any more & many are worn out.  I have heard of Mustang II, Ford Escort, Ford Pinto, Toyota MR2 racks being used in all sorts of restomod cars, but I've never seen anybody doing anything in a 620..............NOT saying hasn't been done!

Car steering boxes are behind the front wheels. Trucks are in front. A car R&P would turn the front wheels on a truck opposite to the direction turned. Think about it for a moment and you'll agree.

 

I did put an actual power steering box, not R&P, from a zx into my 620. Used a D21 PS pump on a home made bracket below the distributor.

The 720 has power steering gear but it is mounted to the other side of the frame, and of course everything else is different...

To make mine work I had to loose the one piece steering column/box in favor of an articulated 720 PS column. The 280zx box was on the inside of the frame and the 620 pitman arm fit.
