jagman
Is there an easy way to remove the front seal cover on the tranny ? I have removed the bolts and have gently tapped the pivot arm to attempt to loosen the cover plate to no avail. Is there a trick to this? Something I am doing wrong? Love to hear from an expert. Draker
It's sealed with RTV, you'll probably have to tap harder. Just dont tap on the end of the tube, its cast and will break. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Do it this way with a socket extension. I know because I did it the other way and snapped the nose off. Quote Link to comment
bottomwatcher
Yep good angle there Mike. Looks like a cast Iron one. I have had some that were iron and some were aluminum. Any rhyme reason to why they were made from different metals over the years? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I had an '85 SD25 diesel 5 speed and was surprised to find it was steel rather than aluminum. Quote Link to comment
jagman
Mike, That trick did the job with no damage. Thanks for the tip. The drive train is now back in place with new seals and a new clutch slave cylinder and boots. Final tightening and exhaust work tomorrow. Thanks a bunch!! Steve 2 Quote Link to comment
BLUESTEAL
Do I have to remove the trans to replace the front seal and seal cover ? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You sure do. There's no way to get at it with the engine in the way. Quote Link to comment
BLUESTEAL
Ughh, I’m not looking forward to yanking it out but that will give me the opportunity to blast everything clean again😶 and change that bad seal. Any tricks to dropping the trans on a 4X2 standard cab ‘85 720? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Not really, they are all equally difficult. Quote Link to comment
BLUESTEAL
Thank you Mike, looks like a bare knuckle afternoon. On another note, where would I find the gear ratio tag on the diff? Finally found the 15 inch wheels I wanted, to replace the 14’s that are currently on. Thanks again. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It's on the engine tag located on the right inner fender under the hood hinge. Bottom line says TRANS/AXLE........ FS5W71B....... HF38 with 38 being a 3.889 41.... 4.11 37.... 3.70 35... 3.454 Quote Link to comment
